PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President arrived back at the White House from Camp David this afternoon, as his wife and daughter arrived safely in Ghana on their first leg of a visit to Africa. Along with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, on Monday they will head the official delegation to the inauguration of Liberia's first woman president.

In Texas, the President's father, former President GHW Bush, was on hand to christen the USS San Antonio, the first in the Navy's new class of amphibious landing ships. The former president was the keynote speaker.

Navy Commissions USS San Antonio Former President George H.W. Bush delivered the keynote address as the U.S. Navy commissioned the USS San Antonio at Naval Station Ingleside.

The San Antonio is the lead ship in the Navy’s new LPD 17 class, which will eventually replace three classes of amphibious vessels that are aging.

The former president was among more than 6,000 people Sunday at Naval Station Ingleside today who watched the USS San Antonio go into service.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, was also on hand for the commissioning ceremony of the $1.7 billion warship.

The San Antonio is the first of the Navy's new class of amphibious landing ships.

It has a crew of 360 sailors and can haul up to 800 Marines and their equipment.

The San Antonio also has two surgical theaters, a 24-bed infirmary and other medical facilities.

The ship must now go through a few years of training before it's deployed in 2008.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

During an interview with the press corps on her plane, the First Lady discussed several topics, including the following:

Laura Bush begins visit to West Africa

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) — First lady Laura Bush said Sunday that the U.S. government is right to eavesdrop on Americans with suspected ties to terrorists, and that President Bush worries that revelations about the domestic spying program will cripple efforts to foil terrorists.

"I think the American people expect the United States government and the president to do what they can to make sure there's not an attack by foreign terrorists," Mrs. Bush said just before landing here to begin a four-day stay in West Africa.

"I think he was worried that it would undermine our efforts by alerting terrorists to what our efforts are," she said.

Yes you are right because I was doing the dose that night and did a bit on it and you said you wished you had realised earlier in the day as it would have stopped a wasted trip to the post office.

A friend of mine got me interested in physical exercise in my twenties, which I hadn't before as my parents weren't interested in sports or physical activities.

What was the most fun thing about cheerleading? Our President was a cheerleader, too, as you probably know.

Are you still having rain?

No, sigh. A system came in yesterday and left quickly. Put barely a fraction of an inch of moisture on the ground here. It's one of those dry winters here.

Black patten leather with a strap to hold the shoe on your foot.

I found out later that my foot needs a "combination last," a pattern for building the shoe that has a narrow heel and normal front where the toes go.

Without the strap I would walk out of the shoes due to my narrow heel.

Then I found Naturalizer brand which used to have a narrow heel.

We had a little rain yesterday here in the Central Valley of California.

It's in the mid 40's now and supposed to go down to 39 later tonight. Was sunny today here.

Here a federal holiday is just that -- for federal offices only. The states can do as they please, although they all follow federal practice. Private companies and organizations are free to do as they please although, again, most follow federal practice. However, Martin Luther King Day is too close to the Christmas-New Year's holiday period for many companies to give it as a holiday.

Thanks for posting the DOSE tonight!

Just finished watching the premiere of '24' . . . WOW!
[Just one question: Why is Audrey still alive (bleck)!]

Both son and daughter are staying overnight at friends' houses, so hubby and I have the house to ourselves . . . hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Before saying good night, however, I want to post at least one 'must read':

MUST READ:

HAM-HANDED DEMS DIDN'T LAY A GLOVE ON ALITO
January 15, 2006
BY MARK STEYN

I find it, as grave somber Senate Democrats like to say, "troubling." Indeed, I find it not just "troubling" but sad that a party once so good at "the politics of personal destruction" has got so bad at it. The last time they had a Supreme Court nominee to hang upside down in the Democrat bondage dungeon was the John Roberts hearings. And at least, when hatchet man Chuck Schumer professed himself "troubled" by the "fullness" of John Roberts' "heart," the crack oppo-research guys had uncovered an "inappropriate" use of the word "amigo" by Roberts back in the early '80s.

But, with Sam Alito the worst they come could up with was that he might have been around some other guy who might have used the word "amigo." Not back in the early '80s, but in the early '70s.

That's it?

You can read the rest of Steyn's column at

Night all!

Just being part of the "team" ... all the fun, traveling to the away games, the spirit of being devoted to and cheering for the team.

Here is an article I found on the net that might interest you. It was refreshing to find something on the net that was not nasty about him.

<< I would have hated it as a teenager to have had my father be president, and the constant snapping of pictures would be only one of the reasons. Every little misstep I made would be brought out, and I've had my share. >>

Except she is not a teenager any more and hasn't been for quite some time. She is 22 or 23 now. She has had time to develop into a poised young lady.
Also, she chose to be part of our official delegation to the inauguration of the Liberian president. She is an official representative of the USA.
If she doesn't want to be photographed she shouldn't go on official delegations.
The last time she went to Africa, she went as a private person -- last summer, when she worked as a volunteer in the hospital in Capetown SA -- & there were NO photographs when she was in Capetown on her own.

Thank you for that reply (I guess).

Six years ago, when President Bush first took office, both girls were teenagers. Remember the 'underage drinking margaritas at a bar' thing, to name just one instance out of many? That was what my post was referring to.
