Weapons of Disruption
C 2006 Frederick J. Cowie, Ph.D.
Whereas we have no masses, it certainly would be seriously challenging to deliver a "weapon of mass destruction" in the vast majority of geographical areas in the American West, as well as in many areas in the East and South. For instance, Montana is approximately the size of Germany, yet the population hovers only around a million (we have one representative in the House). There is no "metropolitan" area anywhere around, though Spokane is about three hundred miles away. Wyoming has more sheep than people. Utah has Salt Lake City and a few nearby populous areas. Nevada has two populated regional areas, Las Vegas and Reno. North and South Dakota have, well, a few folks here and there. Idaho folks are few and far between. I swear you can drive from San Antonio to El Paso without seeing a city policeman, because I've done it several times. Then there are Arizona, New Mexico, eastern California, inter alia. The point is we have a few population points, while the rest of the states are empty excepted for isolated small communities. Thus, out West we probably need to talk more about "weapons of disruption." (Some folks say "weapons of mass disruption," but we have no masses!)
You must ask yourself: What would I do if I were a terrorist (or a terrorism preparedness instructor) looking into the ramifications of launching a rural terrorism attack? Personally, I would concentrate on considering the consequences of disruption rather than mass destruction. Here are a few scenarios you might want consider when your local rural emergency management/response group gathers to discuss terrorism exercises.
1) Wildland Fire Incidents: Incendiary (mostly wildland) warfare has been used by military strategists for at least 2500 years, over a thousand years before the use of gunpowder. The western U.S. is disrupted, seriously disrupted, every year by wildland fires. Quite a few are started by humans, accidentally and purposefully. Starting dozens of major fires in a dozen western states could be a brilliant line of attack if militants wished to disrupt America. Thousands of security personnel could do nothing and the perpetrator/s would probably never be implicated, much less captured. Are you prepared?
2) Railroad Chemical Incidents: Many railroad main lines go through tunnels. A few strategically placed armor-piercing shells in a series of chlorine cars, along with appropriately staged derailments leaving the leaking cars in the tunnels, could shut down many main line routes in the West. Spin-off scenarios are numerous. Ready?
3) Flammable Liquid Incidents: Bridges are not easily brought down from below and approaches to bridge support structures are often highly visible and randomly monitored. However, on CNN we all have seen many tanker truck accidents involving burning hydrocarbons which have made bridge structures unusable. How hard would it be to have a few terrorists steal trucks and drive them (as opposed to hijacking planes and flying them) to strategic bridges over wide rivers or narrow gorges, ignite the gasoline (or diesel or crude), block the approaches with other incendiary or chemical releases, and make the structures extremely dangerous and impassible to highway traffic? Gotcha!
There are many variations of these themes. You probably have or can make up many more plausible, novel, and easily implemented rural-specific attack scenarios. Design exercises around them. If you want to stop terrorist events you must think like a terrorist and quit fighting last year's war!
Peace, thanks, Fred

JEFF JACOBY
Questions the Islamic Society should answer
By Jeff Jacoby, Globe Columnist | January 1, 2006
EVER SINCE 9/11, we learned last month, federal officials have been
monitoring radiation levels around a number of American mosques. It is
an understandable precaution, given Al Qaeda's interest in acquiring
nuclear weapons, and its history of mass murder.
(snip)
the need to focus self-defensive
attention on mosques. Unfortunately, we are at war with violent
Islamist radicals, and they are not above using mosques to incubate
terrorism. If there is evidence of heightened radioactivity around a
Muslim facility, the government should be aware of it, and should find
out -- lawfully, (snip)
The federal monitors have been checking for physical radiation, but
there are other ways in which mosques can be radioactive.
Last year, for example, Freedom House issued a report on the extent to
which Saudi publications in US mosques promote Wahhabism, the harsh,
supremacist version of Islam that is the established creed in Saudi
Arabia. Many of these publications, it turned out, were riddled with
religious bigotry. They advocated contempt for ''infidels," portrayed
America as alien territory, and urged Muslims to prepare for jihad.
Considering the use of such teachings in recruiting terrorists, one
might well view the presence of this literature in the library of an
American mosque as ''radioactive," and a legitimate cause for concern.
Which brings us to the roiling controversy over the mosque being built
by the Islamic Society of Boston -- a controversy made all the worse
by an abusive lawsuit the Islamic Society has filed against its
critics.
When completed, the $24 million mosque will be the largest Muslim
house of prayer in the Northeastern United States. The Islamic Society
has pledged that it will also be a center for moderation, peace, and
dialogue among different religious communities. It was in part on the
strength of that pledge that the Islamic Society was allowed to buy
the land for the mosque from the city for a fraction of its fair
market value.
But for more than two years, questions have been raised about just how
committed the Islamic Society really is to moderation and interfaith
understanding. Beginning with reports in the Boston Herald, news
outlets, citizen groups, political officials, and private citizens
have been pointing out disturbing signs of extremist ''radioactivity"
around the Islamic Society and its leadership.
To mention only a few:
The society's original founder, Abdurahman Alamoudi, is now serving
a 23-year prison term for his role in an assassination plot. The
Treasury Department identified him as a fund-raiser for Al Qaeda, and
he has publicly proclaimed his support for two notorious terrorist
groups, Hamas and Hezbollah.
Yusef al Qaradawi, who for several years was listed as a trustee in
Islamic Society of Boston tax filings and on the Islamic Society
website -- the Islamic Society now claims that was due to an
''administrative oversight" -- is a radical Islamist cleric who has
endorsed suicide bombings and the killing of Americans in Iraq. In
2002, he was invited to address an Islamic Society fund-raiser, but
had to do so by video from Qatar -- he has been barred since 1999 from
entering the United States.
Another Islamic Society trustee, Walid Fitaihi, is the author of
writings that denounce Jews as ''murderers of the prophets" who
''brought the worst corruption to the earth" and should be punished
for their ''oppression, murder, and rape of the worshipers of Allah."
After Fitaihi's words were reported in the Boston press, the Islamic
Society was urged to unequivocally repudiate them. It took seven
months before it finally did so.
When Ahmed Mansour, an Egyptian-born Muslim scholar, examined the
Islamic Society's library in 2003, he found books and videotapes
promoting hostility toward the United States and insulting other
religions. Among the publications on hand were several of those listed
in the Freedom House report.
Individually, none of these points proves that there is anything amiss
with the Islamic Society. Taken together, they give rise to obvious
questions and concerns.
Surely the Islamic Society, which emphasizes
its commitment to moderation, tolerance, and dialogue, should be at
pains to answer those questions and allay those concerns. Instead it
accuses its critics of defamation, and has sued many of them for -- of
all things -- conspiring to deprive Boston-area Muslims of their
religious freedom.
But the last thing Muslims in Boston or anywhere else need is a
leadership that treats legitimate public misgivings as an anti-Muslim
''conspiracy," or that launches specious lawsuits in order to
intimidate those looking into its record.
The Islamic Society's
overreaction does rank-and-file Muslims no favors -- and gives all of
us, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, another reason to wonder about its
motives.

Sounds very useful to me.........
That, according to an Arkin commentary in the Washington Post in May, could include anything
from electronic jamming to penetrating computer networks, to commando operations, to the use of
a nuclear earth penetrator. CONPLAN 8022, he wrote, is intended to address two scenarios using
such capabilities: preventing a suspected imminent nuclear attack from a small state, and
attacking an adversarys suspected WMD infrastructure.<<<<
Perfect.

Key arrest is revealing of terrorist underworld
Loa'i Mohammad Haj Bakr al-Saqa, wanted by Turkey for 2003 bombings in Istanbul that killed 58 people, is said to have eluded intelligence services by using an array of fake IDs, employing aliases even with his al-Qaida contacts and finally faking his death in Fallujah, Iraq, in late 2004.
The Syrian radical didn't surface until last August, when an accidental explosion forced him to flee his safehouse in the Turkish resort of Antalya, police say. Officers reported finding bomb-making materials meant for an attack on an Israeli cruise ship.

He does a good interview program on closing the Mexican Border.
This group is scary.
But you scared me, I figured the post was by some that I have heard, who want to go to war with Mexico.
Sounded like a good plan to close the border and then I reached the end and it was someone else entirely.
There is a lot on this group in the Free Republic archives.
My googles did not really do them justice, a few months ago,
I hit google on them and got different results, all scary.
We do not really know what is lurking south of the border in Mexico.
To me the reports of the dangers to Israel, are downright
alarming.
Iran is said to supply the money for those arms, they are
loading the terrorists up with them.
One of these days Israel will simply say "Enough!".
I assume, they are buying time, for us to finish cleaning
out Iraq and re-stock, for the next move.
Interesting, Freeper Gunny Bob does a show on:
850 koa.com
You can listen on the computer.
He just said that we do not need a draft.
That we only have 7% of our military in Iraq.
That the war on terror will go on for another 50 years.
Gunny Bob is cleared for a trip to Iraq, this month, as I
recall, he will go, see, get the TRUTH, and even broadcast from there.
Thank you for the links DC.

Thanks for the ping DC. I will never understand why we force Israel to give back land, nor will I ever understand why Israel goes ahead and gives land back.
