Southwest is fighting now to repeal the Wright amendment, which would allow Southwest to fly long-haul flights out of Love Field in Dallas. Love, like Midway, is a small airport with little buffer between it and city neighborhoods and streets.

If Southwest is allowed to expand its traffic out of Love, with other airlines thus doing the same because Southwest refuses to fly out of the larger airport, it's just a matter of time till what we see tonight in Chicago happens in Dallas.

I commented: all onboard were safe

I was away from the computer, I just heard some were injured in the cars, some seriously. Very sad, prayers sent for all involved.

Do you have any idea how far I am from ANY White Castle Restaurant? And how much I'm craving, now that you mentioned it?

You and me both.

Every year I go to the Indi 500 and get 3 dozen WCs on the way to the airport. I put them in my special "Sliders" bag, bring them home and freeze them.

One year the bag was stolen. The airlines called me the next day to tell me they found the bag in the women's bathroom. All the burgers were still there.

I was in shock. How could someone get their hands on the best food on the planet and not eat them? As far as I was concerned that was a thief's find of a lifetime!

I've stuffed a Thanksgiving turkey with em, made a pate with em and even have a recipe (all be it a poor substitute) to make them at home. The ultimate comfort food.

and now they're unemployed and unemployable.

My mistake, I had bad info, I had heard that the problem was more of the pilots landing safely in bad conditions. I stand corrected.

Yeah, see my post #265. I had FOX on briefly, I guess before they reported the smashed cars? I was under the impression it was a safe landing in blizzard conditions. I agree, it could have been much worse.

We had just heard that a child was killed. The thread chilled.

On a related note, Southwest's crisis management team is currently scheduled to arrive at ORD at 12:39 AM CST. It'll show on flightaware.com as flight number 8804, leaving Dallas-Love at 11:00 PM. If there are any Chicago-area planespotters who want to brave the blizzard, this would be a good chance to get a rare shot of a Southwest plane at O'Hare.

Extremely unusual we have back-to-back days of people getting killed in the USA in relation to commercial air travel. Both situations are very sad (although the air marshals did exactly the right thing, IMO).

I was on a Southwest flight from San Francisco to Boston 2 years ago, that had a stop in St. Louis. Circled about 8 times, they come on the PA and say the indicator light says the landing gear is not down and locked. Can't fix it. They tell us to assume crash positions, the works. Then they land. Gear holds, it was a bad indicator not a bad gear. They gave everyone on the plane a free pair of tickets. We went on our merry way.

Those frozen things don't pass for real sliders

I agree. I think it's because they are missing the aroma and the scintillating taste that can only be achieved with a large amount of grease. (But when you're desperate, changing the pickles help.)

Did you grow up in East Chicago? I seem to remember that.

Well wopty-do everybody, guess what airlines I get to fly on when I go back home for winter break. I hope I don't end up in a ditch somewhere in Death Valley.

Yes, I heard a little too late. Very sad. I heard the report apparently very early on and missed the updates about the death and serious injuries in the cars in the planes path.

My thoughts exactly. This couldn't have happened at O'Hare and couldn't happen at DFW, but it will if Wright is repealed.

I saw last week where Dallas Mayor, Laura Miller, just happened to realize that Love was losing money - some 5.5 million I think the article said. She wants to raise landing fees at Love. Apparently, SW pays something like .34 per 1,000 lbs to Love whereas DFW fees are around $1.40. If those landing fees are raised to something close to the fees at DFW, there's not much incentive for Southwest to have Wright repealed.

I just re-read the article. Here are the correct numbers:

The landing fees at Love Field are 35 cents per 1,000 pounds. At DFW Airport, the fees are $4.94, which is lower than what airport managers originally reported.

I would need a few stiff drinks before getting back on an airplane after that adventure and I don't drink, at least not very often.
What is up with Boston being the final destination? Years ago, my sister had a very bad experience on a flight into or out of JFK that included getting off of the plane with the emergency chutes onto the runway. She had a few drinks then had to board another plane to get to her final destination of Boston.

I'm not familiar with the area, unfortunately I've never been to Chicago. That would indeed be interesting to see and fun under better circumstances. Was the original flight not scheduled to land in Chicago?

The accident flight landed at Midway Airport, as scheduled, where Southwest has all their Chicago operations. Southwest won't operate scheduled service to O'Hare, Chicago's main commercial airport, as it's exactly the kind of busy, expensive major-airline hub that they avoid. But since Midway is closed due to the crash until at least morning, the crisis team will have to go to O'Hare, which other than a charter flight will be the only time anyone will see a Southwest jet parked at O'Hare.
