Yesterday, George W. Bush strode to a podium in Tucson, Arizona (I love Tucson!) and against a backdrop of law enforcement officers, announced his latest plan to crack down on illegal aliens. There was nothing in his speech we haven't heard before, and his new immigration policy is just as contradictory as the old one. Among the initiatives announced:
We should build more jail cells to hold illegal aliens. Good idea. The speeding up of deportations, a crackdown on fraudulent identity papers, and a hardening of the border with more surveillance. So far, so good. Then the nonsense started to flow. The president urged Congress to pass his guest-worker amnesty program and repeated the nonsense that the illegal aliens are here "to fill jobs that Americans will not do."
Same old, same old. It is impossible to stand there and say you're going to crack down on illegal immigration while at the same time say that you are going to reward people who broke our immigration laws. The president says it's not amnesty. Ok, now we've finally caught the president in a lie. OF COURSE it's amnesty! When you tell someone who has broken the law that you are not only going to ignore their illegal conduct, but you are actually going to reward them for it, then you have more than plain old garden variety amnesty, you have amnesty with perks!
As for the oft-repeated line that the illegal aliens fill jobs Americans won't, that's also a load. Companies may not be able to fill those jobs with Americans at the same low wages they pay Mexicans, but there are plenty of people in this country that would do the work at the right price. OK .. so the price of headless chickens, landscaping and construction might go up, but at least the people receiving those paychecks would be law-abiding residents of this country, most of whom would be citizens. There is something wrong with the idea of celebrating lower home prices when those lower prices are brought with disrespect for the laws of our country. It gets worse than that. We are threatening our very security by singing the praises of illegal aliens in our workforce. Just two weeks ago we were interviewing a Texas congressman who was telling us that U.S. intelligence agencies have knowledge that Al Qaeda terrorists have moved to Mexico, adopted Hispanic identities, learned the Spanish language, and then moved right into the United States across our porous borders.
George Bush failed to address the problem appropriately yesterday, but this isn't strictly a George Bush issue. There is absolutely no willingness on the part of either political party to crack down on illegal immigration. There are simply too many votes to be had in the Hispanic community. So as a result, our security as a nation is threatened and our cities and states are overrun with illegal aliens.
I'm sure representatives of Al-Qaeda are preparing to apply for their guest-worker permits as we speak.
Do you have a source for that data?
Illegal immigrants do a lot of jobs that we would not be able to find enough Americans to fill in agriculture, lodging, construction, food service, etc. You aren't going to find enough people who want to go out and pick grapes and fruit all day in the sun, or enough people who want to clean up all those motel rooms. If we lost all those workers then companies would have to pay much higher wages to attract American workers and still wouldn't find enough of them. The higher costs would force higher lodging, restaurant, and housing prices, which would then result in reduced business and the loss high-paying jobs in management, IT, and sales that Americans now fill.
Deportation of millions of guest workers is a crazy idea that would generate massive inflation and recession just before a presidential election in 2008. Freepers are generally smart on most issues, but I read a lot of crazy, uninformed posts about immigration.
A nice little thumbnail description that applies to every member of the tiny FR quisling contingent.

very late to the party on this one - but some may not have seen it
Ok so Reagan was not a genius.. That "planet of the apes" ideology "Monkey does not harm monkey" is quite Primatitive.. Reagan was only right most of the time, not all the time..
The impact of Hillary possibly winning in 2008 isn't short-term. As Bob Barr said, "this country barely survived the Clinton Admistration." Another eight years of Clintonism, complete with Chinese agents roaming the halls of the White House, could actually destroy our country for the long term.
Jorge Arbusto is not a repulican, he is a stinking globalist.
What other laws should we stop enforcing? I mean, why reward only the criminal invaders from Mexico. Good, decent American criminals should be at least equally rewarded. How about excusing all tax evasion and other related crimes? Heck, how about excusing armed robbery while we're at it. Rape? Sure. Murder? Why not. It is just way too impractical to prosecute and incarcerate so many criminals anymore. I mean, what would happen if we took every criminal off the street? There's all kinds of societal and employment problems that would cause. I'm with you - let's raise the white Murtha flag and surrender to the criminals. I'm sure that our whole nation will be so much better off.
And your point is what?..
Like I said.. The smell of Qusiling is ripe.. You really do need a shower..
Regarding national security, I think there's a lot more activity going on than we ever hear about by the CIA, NSA, and FBI to catch actual terrorists near the border, both here and in Mexico. I would bet that there's much more surveillance of the border area happening than we ever hear about from the media. That's a deliberate strategy to prevent counter-measures by terrorists.
I think so JD Hayworth introduced HR 20 against it, and as far as I can tell even though the head of our SS signed it Presidente Bush has not sent it to Congress yet, but if he does it will pass automatically unless they block it and they have never blocked it..also there is an issue if they can legally block it..

the government is not being honest about its possible destruction of our SS. It didn't even estimate the effect of the millions of illegals who could be eligible to collect SS if it passes. It is incredible...Heck if I willo pay more for illegals to collect SS when I will never see what I put into it. Our Politicians should be delt with harshly.

"Most of us Freepers are beginning to wonder just who's side the 100% Complainers REALLY are on??????"
I strongly suspect that most freepers are on the side of law and order...and thusly some may refuse to march lockstep with anyone who seeks to circumvent our existing laws...ie an amnesty policy.
You won't receive flames from me. I'm way too fried from arguing the same points. Can you imagine Swat teams going from house to house, dragging families off to be deported? The Nazi comparisons we have today wouldn't even compare.
You're funny.
I live on the border. I live in the county in Arizona that has become the most popular crossing point for criminal invaders to break and enter our nation. There's no extra surveillance. You need to see things for yourself to understand. A group here smuggled simulated WMDs across the border fence, on foot to the highway miles away, and then all the way to the Federal Building in downtown Tucson, AZ. They've done this several times to prove a point. Maybe if they'd shot up a flare and used loudspeakers to announce what they were doing, someone might have heard them and the Border Patrol may have stopped them.
Yes I can and it would work in some cases. But what would be more effective and less graphic would be to fine, jail, and seize assets of those who employ illegals. Make it so that it is economic suicide to hire one. Say seize the entire Tysons foods under the RICO act. No work for them they will deport themselves.
I agree; I fear not as much for when I retire, but upon what my children will have left by that time, and not just in SS.
Another VALID POINT too American kids, or regular Americans would do many unglamorous jobs if the pay was higher!... but guess what "businesses" would have to say about that!.... so you see, this is a multifaceted problem with many sides....
I for instance I happen to believe that a business duty should be more than just the bottom line!... (what does this make me, a communist? :)and we go into the OUTSOURCING of jobs abroad!!!.. and what is the excuse here?... blame the illegals for the manufacturing jobs going to China, India, etc? SEE MY POINT HERE?.... and to conclude, maybe is not even "businesses" fault, but politicians who care more about getting elected and rich... and care little for the country?.....
You don't have to "round em up". If you simply make it not welcome for them to be here illegally, they will leave.
Thanks, oldbrowser, for disabusing us of that notion. I will now placidly accept an illegal invasion of our country and America's ultimate demographic transformation because America will not become a Paradise even with effective anti-illegal measures. Freepers, don't expect this:
It's hardly a nazi tactic to arrest those on the streets who are committing crimes; when it's learned that those who they've arrested are here illegally, they can be deported on the spot.
Simple.
