Missile Attack On Passenger Jet?
Radio News | November 28, 2005

Posted on 11/28/2005 4:49:25 AM PST by texianyankee

I heard on the radio this morning, that a pilot of a passenger jet departing LAX claimed to have narrowly avoided being hit by a missile. It was reported that the jet was about 6,000 feet in altitude & over the ocean when the event occurred. The news report further stated that authorities believe it was possibly a flare or a "bottle rocket."

I googled but found nothing. Anyone else have some info on this? I dont recall whether it was CBS or NBC radio news.

If this report were true, I doubt flights would be normal out of LAX. We would probably know something was up due to delays and cancellations.

"Haven't you ever seen three stage bottle rockets?" You are joking right?

To: wyattearp
Sorry,I forgot the /sarcasm after my post. When I was young we would try to tie bottle rockets together in various ways to create multi stages but it always ended in failure.

How old were you at the time?

"Hahaha. Common model rockets (up to D class engines) can go around 3000 ft. straight up. Multistage rockets, of course, go higher than single stage. "

D engines will go 1000' with one pound of payload.
With 3 stages I would guess a lot less than that, not to mention the timing issues.
My point was that it is impractical.

High powered rockets, well, now your talking a different thing altogether...

hmmm. Called the radio station I heard the news on this morning. The producer said he didn't hear the report. I asked if they recorded the news reports and he said yes but then they record over them when the next segment of the morning show comes on. Funny - Drudge doesn't have anything either. Perhaps it is a "bad" story. If so, ABC needs to fess up. But what reason would they give for doing so? 'Oh, we did it just to see if anyone was listening?' Please. I tried to call ABC. I was sent into the abyss.

HAMAS and Hisbollah have been building rockets in Gaza for some time now. They have been using them against Israeli settlements and farms. Eventually, they will perfect one capable of bringing down an airliner.

Sorry to hear of your bad results.
What station/city did you hear your news report?

My station is a small market - I was fortunate enough to get someone who actually made the same observation I made - "no bottle rocket can go 6,000 feet..."

"2000' max for a flare...."

Also, and according to RinaseaofDs, no flare can come close to 6,000 feet either.

I think you're right - unless there was reason to know that the the threat no longer existed, which may have been the case.

If some terrorist tries to bring down an airliner we will NEVER hear about it.
Or it will be the typical deal where a news item leaks like this one and then everyone starts screaming at us to don our tin foil hats.

Thanks for all the pings y'all. I havent heard anything about this, on the news in LA or in the scanner groups.

If an FBI person was quoted, I am guessing this was reported during the long weekend, and not this morning.

I could believe them not releasing any information on Wednesday or Thursday about this....that is the way the powers that be work. Most of the flights were 100% booked out of LAX and the other airports...and a report would have caused a certain number of people to cancel.

With LA looking at a $250 million budget deficit, they wouldnt want to take the hit on the parking revenues at the airport, or other areas. (LA's cut is 10% of the airport parking)

There is also nothing on Landings.com or Airliners.net

Thanks for checking & your report.
When I first heard the radio report this morning, I believe it was reported that the incident actually occurred overnight - Sunday night or early Monday morning.

I heard this report on WMAL, 630 AM in Washington DC this morning. I was in the car from 6:15 a.m. until about 8:15, and it was on once during that time. WMAL carries ABC news.

I listen to am 1040 WWBA here in Tampa Bay. I spoke with Shannon Rose, the producer.

This all seems so surreal to me. Thought you guys might want to check out these two sites. I'm not one for linking other stuff but thought these to be interesting... Sorry if you've seen them before.

Wow, I've heard zero in the news about this.

I also just checked the net and can't find it.

So how did ABC find this and how was it squashed and why?
We must send Joe Wilson to find the real answer's I'm sure...
