Bush Signs $100 Billion Food and Farm Bill

President Bush on Thursday signed a $100 billion food and farm spending bill that includes a two-year delay on labels telling grocery shoppers where their meat comes from.
The legislation postpones mandatory meat labeling until 2008. Originally sought by Western ranchers and required by law in 2004, country-of-origin labeling has stalled under pressure from meatpackers and supermarkets who call it a record-keeping nightmare.
The measure also overrides a court ruling on whether products labeled "USDA Organic" can contain

HA....the other day I picked up some frozen broccoli at Fred Meyers - a big chain part of Krogers.....got home, went to cook it, and the pkg said.....it was from "VENEZUALA"......I couldn't believe it....sheesh.

I guess I am a little old fashioned...spending $100 BILLION bucks does not look like a SERIOUS EFFORT TO REDUCE SPENDING!!!! How stupid does Bush think the public is?? It is just more of the same ole socialism, supporting businesses that cannot support themselves.

beef=cows
pork=pigs
chicken=chicken
veal=baby cows
I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not, so let me say this - I want to know in August that my apples are new crop from New Zealand or old crap from Washington State - I want to know if the shrimp I am buying is from the Gulf(yum) or tasteless from Thailand - I want to know if my beef is corn fed from Nebraska or range raised from Argentina. Maybe they can come up with a grade of generic food for you all who only care about price and labeled food for those of us who care about quality.
I'm with you. There is absolutely NOTHING WRONG here! I want to know where my food comes from. It allows me a choice as a consumer.
With mad cow disease and questionable farming practices in some backwater countries, I would like the opportunity to be able to turn down purchase of a product based on origin.
BTW... as to bookkeeping and tracking: I have one manufacturer that I rep for who codes every single part that comes into his factory and every item assembled is tracked thru assembly and shipment. IF they can do that they can keep track of the food just as easily. Technology will take care of it.

Actually, I am a very picky SOB when it comes to my foodstuffs. I go to local markets for veggies (which I don't grow in my own garden), and to the mom & pop butcher shop for meat. I just don't care for the extra I am forced to pay if I want to purchase those same items at a retail chain store.
The regulation of every aspect of our lives needs to cease. People need to take responsibility for their own actions.
I can prepare a Pad Thai that would knock your socks off, but not with farm raised Thai shrimp from WalMart.

They can only do so if they know what those actions involve - one can only make choices, when one knows what the choices are.
I have food allergies and it would be nice to know where the food comes from and what is in it. I don't mind paying extra for food that I know I can trust. Why is it wrong to want the food vendors to label their product accurately and honestly?
If Reagan were a second term President with a majority in both houses, the Department of Education would be history. I would like to dream that the Department of Agriculture would be too.
Food Lion pioneered that practice. That and marinating old fish to mask the smell.
If you know what you are allergic to, the best option is to avoid those products. I realize that you may come into contact with some products which contain precursors to the allergens which you are sensitive to, but that is an everyday hazard you must cope with. Your best bet is to keep the Benadryl/Epi pen handy.
OTOH, does it have anything to do with where the produce or meat originated? I think not. I have partaken of foods in every country in Europe (East and West), Central and South Asia, and the Philippines. I have eaten what the locals eat, without suffering any malady.
If consumers are willing to pay extra for a label that is honestly telling them that the product that they are purchasing meets certain standards then why should it bother anyone? The organic and whole foods is a rapidly growing market because people are realizing that if they want to have good health they have to eat real unadulterated foods.
I don't mind eating foods from other countries as long as they are honestly labeled. There are some countries that just don't have the same standards that we do here for raising their animals and produce. Therefore as a consumer I have the right to know where my food comes from and how it's raised. I'm willing to pay extra for it because since I made the switch to a whole foods diet my health has improved drastically and I have lost over 100 pounds without really trying.
