An excerpt from page 201 of her new book:
Within minutes of Buckhead's original posting, Freepers began to repeat and embellish Buckhead's thoughts. Not surprisingly, they all agreed with him, they all agreed with one another, and they all agreed this should be pursued aggressively. Freethinkers they are not. The Freepers and their lockstep like-minded fellow travelers moved as a group, like a school of sharks sweeping toward an unaware and unarmed victim. CBS was like some sunburned, overweight Florida tourist with a cut foot, floundering and flapping in the water alone in the surf. The Freepers swarmed CBS not because it was right or fair but because they could. On Web sites such as Powerline, INDC Journal, Allahpundit, and Spacetownusa, the bravehearts of the blogging world worked anonymously in what appeared to be huge numbers, in unison, to destroy the Bush-Guard story, to uphold one another's wild and hateful claims, to outshout, outargue, and outblog anyone who dared to disagree. And on their Web sites there is no disagreement. They hate in unison, they speak with one angry voice, they each make themselves bigger by staying as close together as possible.

The sun shone brightly after the dark and stormy night, but our protagonist was too engrossed in her project to notice, as her fingers crawled over the keyboard like a pair of large spiders circling, searching for the opportunity to strike - because for spiders, cannibalism is just another meal - to suck the life juices out of its adversary, but the looming deadline was the real predator, sucking words from the mind driving those wandering hands to complete their nefarious fiction in time for the broadcast.
...The Freepers and their lockstep like-minded fellow travelers...
Lockstep?
I guess the hag-troll has never even stopped in here, unless she landed on a "Day in the Life" thread, otherwise there's always blood on the floor and flamethrowers blasting.
Get a clue, Mary.
You lying chump.
In all other branches of government, officials are elected, or re-elected (or not). The media (the 5th branch) is immune from this.
What we've witnessed here on Free Republic is the first election of the press, and the incumbent lost.
Can't you feel 'em circlin' honey?
Can't you feel 'em swimmin' around?
You got fins to the left, fins to the right,
and you're the only bait in town.
Well if nothing else, Mary Mapes SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS!
Her book is a tremendous FLOP!
Truth and Duty : The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power (Hardcover)
by Mary Mapes
Amazon.com Sales Rank: #902 in Books
Barnes & Noble Sales Rank: 865
Editing needed: The Freepers CBS swarmed AND ATTACKED CBS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES not because it was right or fair OR EVEN TRUTHFUL but because they could.
Ms. Mapes could stand to listen to her hero:
Clinton: "I think I did something for the worst possible reason -- just because I could. I think that's the most , just about the most morally indefensible reason that anybody could have for doing anything. When you do something just because you could ... I've thought about it a lot. And there are lots of more sophisticated explanations, more complicated psychological explanations. But none of them are an excuse ... Only a fool does not look to explain his mistakes."
Brian Ross: Mary, aren't YOU responsible for the demise of Dan Rather...and CBS News?
Mapes: It's only a flesh wound!
Mapes and her ilk do lurk here, and I would wager more often than either of us would imagine...
And the Mao Tse-Tung Academy of Free Speech.
"Mark my words if the Democrats ever come back to power they will put severe restrictions on speech and the internet or find a way to stop people from exposing their lies."
That's fine... FR can move it's servers to somewhere out of their jurisdiction, where internet access will be freer... like Russia. Weird, huh?
I have no doubt, Sir Francis, which means that she would know the kind of vigorous, intramural fact checking that goes on here, which just means that Mapes is lying again and trying to sell yet another false story.
"I'm a feminist..."
Well, Mary, if you are a true feminist, then act like a man and stop whining! That's what you feminists want, isn't it -- to be treated like men?!
SHEESH! These dem/lib/socialist/feminazis make me sick!
(Thanks -- I needed that!)
That is a very odd thing to say, since that is exactly what happened. And odder still, when the majority of people who looked at alternative facts decried hers and called her "wrong," she called them hateful and herself a victim.
The press views itself as the David against the Goliath of the government. They do NOT appreciate being cast in the role of Goliath because it seriously challenges their entire world view.
I have more contempt for the nameless, faceless "producers" in the mainstream press than I can possibly express. Talk about anonymous people with opinions moving lockstep. Sheesh.
Yep. There was a whole lot of back an forth before the font experts finished their analysis.
Two simple facts make Mapes claims rubbish. In the year since the CBS fiasco, not one document from ANY 1970 source has matched the typesetting features of the CBS documents. Even one piece of unrelated paper from any National Guard unit the matched those documents would do.
Second, even though IBM Composers were raher common, and some working units still exist, no one has been able to duplicate the appearance of the CBS documents.
And this woman considers herself a writer or producer?? A high school freshman would receive a C- if they turned in drivel like this.
I a previous life her name was William Randolph Hearst.
Pssht. And here I thought the pen was mightier than the sword, but hey, what do I know.
Ms. Mapes could stand to listen to her hero: Clinton: "I think I did something for the worst possible reason -- just because I could.
But your lesson would be lost on Ms. Mapes. Liberals don't understand irony.
Oh, they think they do -- many Lefties think they're masters of irony. But it's clear they don't -- not when it's turned back on themselves.
They have no genuine sense of humor either -- not in the sense of being capable of recognizing their own foibles.
Today I saw more evidence of this...
Clinton "had to learn the hard way" that a president's jokes should be gently self-deprecating, says the man who was hired to write Clinton's humorous speeches......When he [Mark Katz, Clinton's "humor consultant"] started working with Clinton, they clashed over approach, he says.
