French police made 395 arrests last night as riots intensified for the 11th consecutive night, with violence and fire engulfing towns from the North to the Mediterranean.
In the impoverished suburbs and satellite towns around Paris, where the unrest began on October 27, churches, schools and warehouses were set alight. At least 1,408 vehicles were destroyed, many more than on previous nights, and the random attacks have spread into the heart of the city.
In Grigny, south of the capital, a gang of around 200 youths are reported to have lured police into a housing estate before opening fire with hunting rifles. At least 30 officers were injured, two seriously with lead pellets in the legs and neck.
Riots broke out in beacons of disaffection across the country from Lille, on the border with Belgium, to Montpellier on the Mediterranean coast. In Toulouse, police used tear gas to disperse a mob. Cars were set alight on the streets of Nantes, Orleans, Rennes and Rouen, and youths in St Etienne forced passengers off a bus before burning it. Churches were set ablaze in northern Lens and southern Sete.

In Strasbourg, youths stole a car and rammed it into a housing project, setting the vehicle and the building on fire. "Well stop when Sarkozy steps down," the defiant 17-year-old driver told an Associated Press reporter.
Police are calling for a night-time curfew in affected areas and some senior officers have demanded that troops are brought on to the streets.
Michel Gaudin, France's most senior police officer, said today: "We are witnessing a sort of shock wave that is spreading across the country."

"What are the rioters in France going to do when the run out of cars to torch?"
More people?
These "rioters" have learned their lesson well from the Intifada. Send out your "youths" with primitive (but deadly) weapons. When the cops/soldiers respond with deadly force, world opinion (typically led by the French of course) slams you. The Islamist agitators win either way. Either they take control over their "autonomous areas" by force or by concession. The genius of Bush/Rumsfeld in keeping the War on Terror a "hot war" is evident, in light of this mess in France.
No, it doesn't make sense, appeasement will only exacerbate the situation. It takes strong, aggressive, forceful action, a quick response (TOO LATE!), hit them hard, take out rioter's ring leaders. Since when does doing nothing solve such a problem? I guess it's like any fire, once it runs out of fuel and oxygen, it dies--wow, what a concept.
Ok, I admit I'm a little slow but after seeing the photos and doing a few searches, I realize what's really going on in France. Why is Sarkozy such a lightning rod? Because he's Jewish and could be in line for PM.
Sorkozy and de villepin are the main candidates for the 2007 presidential election.
Sorkozy is tough on crime and pro-American I believe, while de villepin is your dime a dozen french surrender monkey.
FNC is reporting that the French are starting to get nervous about this
Gee ... it only took 2 weeks
"Find some way to broadcast French films to the rioters nonstop. They'll all committ mass suicide in a matter of minutes. Problem solved!"
That...or get Jerry Lewis to act as a mediator between the two sides.
You can't blame the youth
You can't fool the youth
You can't blame the youth of today

You are right, and I never quite looked at it that way. Rummy refused to allow an illusion of peace and tranquility to return. Excellent point.
Actually there's even more subtlety. Rummy allowed for a nice 'cooling down' period, keeping the heat, like you said, without scaring them into a complete frenzy [set on simmer]. It's time we topple another regime, I think. They're getting too smug.
The French people are key here. If they keep buying the liberal BS, they will get themselves killed. And we in the US had better take notes as well. FRegards....

I say, the Big Guns: Hillary screech-speaches.
A storm is coming. We don't know how strong it will be, but we suspect it will be very, very bad. We don't know exactly where it will first strike -- the U.S., France, Italy, Britain, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Australia, Israel or all of the above. What we are seeing now is just the outer bands, a few little squalls that foretell the coming storm.
The one difference is that we couldn't stop the hurricanes; we could only prepare to weather the storm.
Can we stop this thing? Can we prevent WWIII or Holocaust II?
Too bad the pansy police won't be the ones using them...
I just hope he realizes that just because they've been bought, doesn't mean they'll stay bought for long.
SO KEEP SHOOTING THEM UNTIL THEY'RE ALL DEAD!!!!
The French STILL don't get it, do they?
An old piece of mine:
-Time to kick the tires & light the fires, folks- terrorism gathers across the World...--
There's one big difference here:
The Left is unarmed, the Right is armed.
Someone trying to burn my car or house is going to be picking something a lot worse than shotgun pellets out of his butt.
What makes this Sarkozy guy a good guy? Who/what is he?
Pardon my lack of knowledge of French politics.
Wow, that is COLD!
LOL!
What's this thing about something big going down on 11/11? Anything new on that?
