Longtime CBS Evening News anchorman Dan Rather on Tuesday called for a return to independent journalism, telling viewers to be critical of the plethora of "new" media outlets that feign objectivity while working to advance their own - or another's - agenda.
"You need to ask yourself: Is more better, and is all that calls itself news really news," Rather told the estimated 1,400 people who filled the Maine Center for the Arts near capacity for his morning speech on the University of Maine campus. "News is something people need to know which someone, somewhere, doesn't want them to know. All the rest is advertising."

ABC News has not decided who will replace him, the network said on Thursday. Perhaps ABC will replace Ted with someone neutral, fair, and non-partisan... like Bill Moyers.

"News is something people need to know which someone, somewhere, doesn't want them to know. All the rest is advertising." I wonder if that someone who doesn't want you to know would be using forged documents to push a fraudulant story, With the hopes of swinging a Presidential election at a time of war?
Dan Rather pines for the good old days during World War II he would have been tried for treason, He should be charged now, but for the lying media scabs which agree with his agenda and lie to protect their own.

As opposed to the dinosaurs of the "old" media, Mr. Rather?

Journalism/media (broadcast and print) is one of the few 'professions' that has no mandatory licensure requirements.
Many known-names in journalism/media had little formal education.

News is something people need to know which someone, somewhere, doesn't want them to know. All the rest is advertising.Interesting take on what constitutes news. The underlying assumption is that the media knows what is true and knows the motives of all involved. VERY egotistical.

We are biased.
Jim openly states our views on the home page of the web site.
Meanwhile the New York Times feigns objectivity while its views are as passionately on one side of the political spectrum as we are on the other.
The broadcast media for decades portrayed themselves as "objective" and "fair" while they lied, propagandized, slandered, buried important stories, distorted, evaded over and over and over again.
It is incredible that Rather can't figure this out, or is just doing what he did for decades (while stuck on auto-pilot)--
Lie,
Lie,
Lie.

True.
Before I had cable (20 years, 1980's and 1990's), I'd watch the nightly news. Some broadcasts were at 5, some 5:30, some 6. So, I usually could catch at least 2 of the 3 networks.
I noticed a very strong resemblance. No only were the major stories almost the same, just broadcast in a different order. But some stories were almost word-for-word the same, and they were more like infomercials than news items.
