"Finally, a word about Mr. Bush: He deserves credit for quickly putting the Miers defeat behind him and returning to his campaign promise to nominate conservatives even at the risk of a political fight. If liberal Democrats want a battle over judicial philosophy, so be it. This is a rumble worth having."

Anyone else wonder if that whole Miers thing wasn't "laying smoke" for what may turn into the mother of all battles with the 'Rats...as well as a flanking maneuver on the right-wingers to make sure they're with the program???

Not on the top of Kerry and Kennedy list. TFB.

I do not need to know every credential Judge Alito has to know he would be a great Justice. The fact that Chuck Schumer hates him is enough for me.
To: Jim Robinson
Aside from the Planned Parenthood and Christian crèche rulings, Alito has found in one case that the constitution does not require states to enact family and medical leave legislation. That tells me more about him than any amount of nicknaming or cheerleading. I think we have a winner here.
Hopefully, he has no skeletons and Frist can keep McCain and his toadies in check. But as with Clarence Thomas, even in the face of low tactics by liberals, Alito seems destined for the high court.

I hope the Surrendering Senate Seven realize THIS is the battle worthy of using the Constitutional Option.

The GOP controls both Houses of Congress, the Presidency, and most appointments to the Supreme Court have been made by GOP Presidents. In addition, most state legislatures and Governorships are GOP as well.
Conservatives will never have a better opportunity to get a truly conservative member of the SCotUS than right here, right now. I'm ecstatic about the possibility of finally getting another actual, bonafide conservative on the court.
It's also an opportunity for the GOP to walk the talk on conservatism, something that's long past due.
What I think conservatives often forget is that getting conservatives elected to political office only gives you the OPPORTUNITY to try to institute your policies. It doesn't guarantee that they will actually be instituted.

There was going to be a fight regardless. With Alito we at least have a nominee worth fighting for.

Excellent article. It's right on.

I hope the gang of seven Republicans realize that if they don`t support this nomination up to and including pushing the big red button that conservatives will leave all of them on their own in 2006.
If that means a loss of the Senate I wonder how Mc Cain and the bunch will like having offices smaller than a phone booth with no TV cameras in sight.

Meanwhile, liberal interest groups are massing for battle--though this is as much about raising money for the 2006 election as it is about defeating Judge Alito.Doesn't that just say it all. Good article, worth the registration.

This is a rumble worth having. This is the rumble Bush was hired to carry out, win or lose...that's why the Miers nomination was such a disappointment to his supporters. Glad to see things are back on track.

..I still can't shake the suspicion, JimRob, that Ms. Miers was Laura Bush's nominee.
Whether or not it is true, it is behind us and over the horizon. The upcoming battle is one we have been waiting for since 1980.
