Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.), the Senate's minority leader, said on ABC's "This Week" today that Bush's nomination of Harriet MIers was not a mistake and he believes she could have done well in a nomination hearing. He urged the president not to be too quick to move to the right on a nomination and to steer toward the middle.

If Harry Reid says Meirs was not a mistake, it was a mistake!
I'm glad she is out of there and America avoided a strategic mistake. Now we shall see if the President makes a similar mistake by trying to molify the likes of Reid, Schumer and the Gang Of 14. He should have had a Eureka! moment from this one. If not there, is something seriously wrong at the top.

"None of the cognoscenti would wait for the Constitutional remedy of a Judiciary Hearing and an "up or down" vote. When Senators Brownback and Graham caved and asked the impossible rather than forthrightly opposing her, there was little left for her to do."

All of what you say is true and makes my heart sing, not because HM didn't get her "hearing", but because the conservatives have finally grown up and learned how to fight. Its not pretty and the rules aren't "fair", have they ever been? I don't know about you, but I'm sick and tired of bringing a knife to a gun fight. Its time to bring a howitzer. If we are going to win the culture war the SCOTUS has got to be changed and like it or not there were reasonable questions about how conservative HM really was. We can't afford to see another Souter "home run" on the court.

Harry Reid tells so many bald faced lies, that I don't see how he keeps in good standing in the LDS Church.
The LDS Church asks a series of questions to determine worthiness before entering the temple. It's called getting a temple recommend. One of the questions asks if you are honest in your dealings with your fellow man. It is QUITE obvious that he is not. One big fat lie after another.
He also accuses Republicans of the very things Democrats they themselves do. Up is down and down is up.
Any Mormons out there ought to write Gordon B. Hinckley about this.

"I didn't know that Limbaugh or Bork had anything to do with the TV campaign against Both were in the add with quotes. Frum actually got all the $ up. He also got up a petition on FR and other places to oppose Miers. These are facts not fantasies.
I saw the add on Fox News. Must have been a big, expensive buy. No conservative pundit or group has ever bought an add against the nominee of a Republican President.
We have new ground here that will ricochet from nominee to nominee for some time.

The woman was a poor candidate. Good riddance.

We have new ground here that will ricochet from nominee to nominee for some timeIf you were to add a couple of commas, say after "have" and "for," this could pass for a piece of Miers' writing.

Both were in the add with quotes. Frum actually got all the $ up.So you were misleading me about Limbaugh and Bork. Nice.
The bottom line is; Miers found the kitchen too hot and got out. That succinctly settles any and all speculation about whether she was fit to be a Black Robe or not.

Harry wouldn't have supported the nomination anyway. Of course he's going to say she was qualified and that the right destroyed her. He's trying to make the right look bad. Democrats didn't have to criticize her at all because the conservatives were tearing her apart.
I'm not saying she was a great candidate, I'm just saying Harry Reid would be singing a different tune if Meirs had actually made it to confirmation hearings.
To: Giant Conservative
If the demo's are claiming her nomination was "good" -> It is even better she was withdrawn from circulation.

She withdrew herself while the President stood behind her.
but what was her defense?
I never saw ANY defense other than "I am Bush. I know her for a long time. Trust me."

Reid's okay was a red-flag moment for everyone.
I hope she continues on as cousel for the Preesident as he seems to trust her judgemnet..I also hoe that he will nominate a known Constitutionalist/Origanislt to the Supreme Court.

?
See, I wasn't really happy with the unknown quantity/quality of the previous nomination.
But, Roberts proved himself in front the hucksters (er, Senator lynch mob) and showed he knew what was the law.
Miers never offered me ANY reason to support her nomination. Nothing she did, (heck - nothing the WH did!) nor anything any of her defenders said indicated she was anything more than an average (corporate/political/well-connected) lawyer.
Now, there's nothing wrong with that. But, why should I support her - When I can find out nothing about her to strongly commend? (And, nothing to condemn her either.)

I've wondered the same...re: "Rope A Dope"

It's called the SUPREME Court for a reason...
This candidate clearly didn't measure up..
I want a candidate that will cause the Senate leftist's heads to explode at the mention of their name.
Yes, I want a fight in the Senate.
I want to see friends and foes identified for all to see.

Exactly. The fact that he is making this statement is WHY withdrawing her was NOT a mistake.
