THAT is the most common misconception you folks have. There is no monolithic conservative "base."

That's not what it sounded like around here the day Kerry conceded. We were all conservatives, if I recall correctly.

The left is already hammering us for it. We gave them more ammo......

Bush gave them the ammo when he nominated her. They were already charging cronyism minutes after the announcement. The Senate would have exposed her total lack of constitutional and judicial knowledge during the hearings and then that would have been more damaging.

Bush could have avoided this by pulling the nomination immediately. In fact, he could have avoided the whole situation by properly vetting her and then properly floating her and then actually pay attention to the reaction to the float.

His stubbornness caused this.

You're, of course, right to question the honesty of my statement. Reviewing my recent posts, I have apparently vacillated between a 70% and an 80% "correct" vote requirement for my ideal Republican-nominated justice.

Actually, I'm not looking anywhere, I think to do so is a waste of my time. The point I'm trying to make is that in the not so distant historical past Christians actually believed in the "Celestial Spheres" and a literal Heaven. They slowly changed their tune when it became obvious that that was untrue. I think the real task for us as a civilization is to find a new basis for the moral framework that gave us the political institutions of The Enlightenment. I know it must come as a shock to you that other conservatives don't share your world view, but don't you think that there is enough disparity between Christian cosmology and what we have discerned from empirical observation of the universe to question the relevance of religion in the modern world.

How would you know? You're obviously not part of it. Why are you even here if you are so opposed to conservative, constitutionalist goals?

Conservatives aren't monolithic but on certain core issues we are united, and court correction is the #1 of all those issues.

That was kind of a Russerty thing to do....pulling up an old post to slam someone...

I know, you win...you win...but, if you want us all to get along, pulling up old posts to critisize someone with is not going to be helpful..

And, you know how much I care about YOU.

Quit using the left's descriptions. We are not "far right". We are not "nasty". We are what most people in this country believe in, but don't realize it. Quit letting your enemies define you.

You don't get it ... the Left will label us that because of what happen

' THEY have the MSM Stage to say whatever they want

No one said we wanted an "evangelical seat" - but how do you KNOW that Miers was not going to be a "good conservative justice . . . provid[ing] a strong criticism of judicial activism to the country and to her fellow justices"?

What were the attacks on her character?

To say she isn't qualified isn't an attack on her character.

Those who engaged in character attacks were the WH and Laura Bush, by calling those who were opposed to her *nomination* as sexist and elitist.

From what I understand,...the qualificaions for SCOTUS justice don't even require American citizenship...am I wrong?

If now....just think of the possiblities from out of our country...LOL

And we could be losing the War on Terror if he weren't stubborn.

It cuts both ways, Jeff.

He thought she was the right person to move the court to the right, and he wasn't going to abandon her.

I'd call that a good quality.

Sorry, but it's 2005 not 1935 or 1965.

Sorry, but there is a direct line between the Pat Buchanans, Alan Keyes, and that style of "conservative," and the 1930's reactionary Right. The words used to argue about issues these days may be different, but the underlying meaning is the same.

Thank you for your reply!

me: In the end, IMHO, it will be an apparent moderate who will tilt one way or the other once on the Court.

you: Which a stealth candidate would do anyway. Better the devil you know when dealing with such an important position and especially when a LIFETIME tenure is involved.

Evidently, to you, the Supreme Court issue is political.

To me, it is a Spiritual issue. Many of us have been praying for a very long time for God to heal the Court because we see it as the cause of this country turning away from Him - building a wall between the inalienable rights of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, interpreting the Freedom of Religion as the Freedom "from" Religion and so on.
