Psychological group urges end of Indian mascots
ESPN ^ | 10/18/05 | AP

The American Psychological Association wants to eliminate the use of American Indian mascots, contending they create stereotypes and damage self-esteem.

"American Indian mascots are harmful not only because they are often negative, but because they remind American Indians of the limited ways in which others see them," Stephanie Fryberg said in a statement. "This in turn restricts the number of ways American Indians can see themselves."

Agreed, Dark Skies. Only the mental midgets on the left could conjur up all these heart-felt feelings of the native Americans, in their thoughts anyway, and put them out there as true feelings of the Indians. It's no different that their recent play re having Indian references in the names of sports teams. What a bunch of flaming idiots....the clearly do not work for a living to have so much time to mentally tinker with nothingness and make it their cause. God help us.

You know its interesting. My school's newspaper (Montana State - Exponent) had an opinion article in the previous one or two back issue that was covering this and another native american project (MSU wants to build a multi-million ~$8m cultural center). IN his opinion he stated like (IIRC) ~30 high schools in Montana have indian related team names/mascots. Of them, like only 3 were not on a Reservation or directly off of one. Its strange, but most of the indian related team names I can think of from MT high schools are on reservations. I would have quoted this kids opinion piece but the paper's website seems disfunctional.

And fricken proud to be one, thank you vy much.

And you should be. I was blessed to grow up in a household that had a bookshelf full of books about native American Indians.

And yes, I do see the indigenous tribes of America as pure and brave, honorable and strong, loyal and determined. People who have provided and continue to provide this nation with a wealth of history and culture.

They should have used judicious abbreviations and made the title: "Psycho. group urges end of Indian mascot"

What about the many native Americans who have their spirits and esteem lifted by the same situation? Who understand that these mascots were chosen to be honored, emulated etc.?

The weak will always find someone or something external to blame their weakness on.

Not sure if they actually officially changed it, BUT, I couldn't find a hat with the Minutman on it and haven't seen anything with him on it in a while. They have a different logo that is on new t-shirts and stuff now. Also, I just read that the Supreme Dictators For Life of The Gay State are considering changing the Massachusetts flag becuase it has an indian brave on it. It also has a sword in hand above the indian, and some jagoff was saying that that implies violence towards indians. Which it doesn't, he obviously doesn't know anything about heraldry.

"When people name things for Indians, it's usually a way to show their admiration for them"

and Respect.

Chief Seattle was a Godsend I think there is a NW city named in his honor. And there's Pontiac - hellofacar in its day - "Dollar for dollar - you can't beat a Pontiac" and on and on - it's - they are part of our collective heritage and culture. WTH rivers - cities - streets - ships and on and on -

suck rocks handwringers - we have and will do just fine w/o your lame ideas and baseless arguments.

""Fighting Irish""

I can weigh in on this as well - did ya know that the Irish were the Special Forces of their day? Thats why Napoleon depended on them so much (my great-great-great whatever and his bro survived the Russian fiasco under N as Irish officers - called by N along w/ many others to serve in his army. FWIW

This is why they stopped teaching history in school. Keep 'em stupid and they'll give you stupid demands.

Major Bingo for they who get it.

Now - once got - just turn it around to something like - if it's to be it's up to ME! and stand back.

PC thought has extended to areas where the supposed victim isn't aware they are a victim until the enlightened ones point it out.

And if the "victims" refuse to side with the PC idiots, then that is PROOF that they are oppressed by whitey.

I heard a spokesman for a tribe here in Tennessee who was asked specifically about the name "Warrior", "Fighting Apaches" etc and his response was, "On the reservation we have a 70% unemployment rate and a 30% alcoholic rate. I have much bigger problems than if someone wants to call themselves the "Redskins".

Mmmmm send 'um all to Arab lands - let them help out there for the greater good of mankind.

They would probably all lose their heads in the rush.
