80% of Potential SCOTUS Nominees on W's List Decline His Offer
Fox News | 10-11-05 | freedom4me

Posted on 10/11/2005 9:08:44 PM PDT by freedom4me

During the 11:00 p.m. (CST) newsbreak, Donna Fuducia reported that Karl Rove told James Dobson that 80% of the potential SCOTUS nominees on the President's list declined his offer because of they didn't want to undergo the grueling confirmation process. Perhaps this sheds new light on the reason why W chose Miers.

Bill Clinton is not worthy of wiping my shoes. If he asked me I would tell him were to put it.

Not a thing. Every thing was right about her and Bush should have nominated for a whole host of reasons. Namely, she is highly qualified for the job, DemoRats might even hesitate bashing a black woman on National TV, it would be hard to call her an elitist because her parents were sharecroppers etc., etc...

"I have contempt for anyone who gets the call to defend our Constitution and declines 'for personal reasons.'"

I don't have the slightest bit of contempt for anyone who saw soliders returning from Vietnam being spat on and then decided this country wasn't worth serving. It was immoral to send boys off to die in a war no one cared about without giving them the support they needed to win and the respect they needed to have honor. In the exact same way, I don't have the slightest ill will for anyone who saw the treatment even Roberts received, let alone Miers, and decided that this political culture is too sick and poisoned to be worth saving. We have fewer than 48 genuine Republicans in the Senate—a lot fewer, when push comes to shove. Don't be shocked when people refuse to march off to have their sacred honor ruined for no purpose.

It's one thing to risk an honorable death in a noble cause. It's quite another to be degraded and ridiculed by your supposed friends in a hopeless fight. It takes a lot of damned gall to say that anyone who refuses to throw himself into the meat grinder that you have created for him is a coward and a traitor. The Republican party is split between pathetic liberal squishes taking potshots at the President for their own political gain, and stiff-necked wingnuts who would rather wallow in ideologically pure defeat than sack up and play the game of politics intelligently. If this is the best ruling party this country has to offer, we don't deserve a Constitution.

It's long been known (and promised) that we were going to send up a conservative (that means pro-life) nominee in the mold of a Scalia.

Jim, I honestly believe the President has done exactly that. If he really wanted to appoint a moderate, he could have done so -- there are plenty of those around!

Not off topic, many brave young Americans risk far more then an embrassing week or two defending the Constitution. Should not the leaders of this nation be willing to suffer a few insults/accusations. No one has been shot in the the Senate yet, so, if I believed this story which I don't, I would fail to understand the lack of courage/commitment.

Don't you believe Dobson spoke up without permission from Rove to do so.

The decison will be made BY THE PEOPLE.

The decision will be made by Bush and the Senate.

This is a representative Republic, not a democracy.

" Whoever's advising the president on this needs to grow a bigger pair!!"

Amen to that.

The republican party for too long has been like the geeky kid at the school dance who's afraid to ask the cute girl if she wants to dance. Instead, he makes excuses as to why she'd never want to dance with him, and then goes home and curses his bad luck.

The Powers That Be in the republican party need to stop making excuses as to why they can't win and start working on ways to get the job done.

I give up ... you and all the Pat Buchanan crowd have royally screwed us ... and we won't get a conservative on the bench now

No, the "Gang of 14" screwed us. Bush screwed us. Bill Frist screwed us. Harriet Miers screwed us. And most of all the Democrats screwed us.

Miers isn't a conservative anyways, so we're not going to get one this way anyways.
A senator would get confirmed, and by unanimous consent. That is a guarantee. The Senate is nothing if not an ol' boys club. They'd never oppose one of their own. Harry Reid even stated that before Roberts was nominated. And apparently, we all are taking Harry Reid's advice now...

I have to agree...as bad as the hoopla over Miers has been, Gonsalez would have been, and will be if it happens, much worse because Dobson and others oppose him. But if W gets two more picks, and he picks a popular conservative for his third pick, he may get away with naming Gonsales for his 4th pick....

Are you referring to his little birdie post yesterday?

In any case, your numbers show 60% declined, and only get to 80% by adding in another disqualified candidate.

My read continues to be that this is not what Dobson is referring to here.

What about Myers (9th Circuit)? Boyle? Both out of Committee now. I haven't heard the President pressure the Senate from his bully pulpit.

And Kavanaugh? Haynes? Saad? They have been stalled in the GOP-controlled Committee since February.

Anyone that refuses to defend the Constitution of the United States when asked by the President of the United States is a coward.
