WASHINGTON -- When in 1962 Edward Moore Kennedy ran for his brother's seat in the Senate, his opponent famously said that if Kennedy's name had been Edward Moore, his candidacy would have been a joke. If Harriet Miers were not a crony of the president of the United States, her nomination to the Supreme Court would be a joke, as it would have occurred to no one else to nominate her.

This nominee has really brought out the BushBots in full force. "None so blind as those who will not see."
Dolt in chief now is it?

You need to increase your dose!
Krauthammer is a DU troll!
Yep...so much for government by, for, and of the people. I guess the days are gone when even a competent, accomplished, and well-educated citizen should even consider participating in our government works.
Interpreting the law is a very simple matter, until you have to appear in court.
However, President Bush has proven time and time again that he is NOT a dolt. Far from it.
He's also demonstrated that he knows what he's doing when picking judges.
The bumper stickers - BUSH/CHENEY2004 -- were removed from my three vehicles today.
By me, that is.
I find myself embarassed at supporting a President who would make such a wimpy selection for a US Supreme Court nominee.
Sorry GWB. I really want to support your admistration, but that's how I feel.
Holy crap. I am ashamed of myself.
What about Krauthammer's excellent point on how Miers will have to recuse herself on so many issues that she was immersed in while White House counsel? Bush blew it. I don't care what his strategy is - it all stinks to high heaven. It's like his dad saying, Watch who I pick for VP - this decision is all mine - and he picks Dan Quayle. A nice guy, yes, but a total lightweight for being #2 in line for the Presidency. Now W picks a woman who has worked very hard to put women on the frontlines of combat, illegally. If she can circumvent the law as an adviser, I am very worried with she would do on the SCOTUS.
I doubt that this will occur if her role was in explaining the aspects of law that apply to a president who then made his own decisions she will not have had a conflict of interest. How often has Justice Ginsburg recused herself from ACLU initiated cases?
As far as being close to the president, well, thats just the things about the presidency Charles. It need not be compared to a monarch bestowing land to a favorite prince but the fact is that the president does have some "king" like powers. How about Clinto who bestowed pardons for money. At least he wasn't close to the Mark Richs of the world? Or was he?
Another one to add to the list! Thanks!!!
Those that are arguing that are being disengenuous. I doubt that they would object to Luttig or Brown. Although I suppose that given she has zero track record, it might be nice if she had a better educational background, but I don't really care about that.
I'd forgotten that. ;)
In other words, Miers simultaneously fills the "Nascar Dad" and the "distaff" slots on the SC ?
I just wish he would have chosen someone younger.
Whatever...I am extremely pro-Bush and perhaps I am naive to his faults. I trust W, wholeheartedly.
No kidding!
