October 5, 2005 -- THE producer at the center of last year's "Memogate" scandal at CBS News says she was derailed by a vast right-wing conspiracy.
The producer, Mary Mapes, is one of four CBS staffers fired last January in the wake of the scandal.
She is convinced she was the victim of a group of loosely associated Internet bloggers "with a harsh political bent" who pounced on CBS News minutes after the airing of the now-infamous Texas Air National Guard story on "60 Minutes 2" in September 2004...
"Within a few minutes, I was online visiting Websites I had never heard of before: Free Republic, Little Green Footballs, Power Line," writes Mapes...
"They were hard-core, politically angry, hyperconservative sites loaded with vitriol about Dan Rather and CBS."
"This was something else, something new and fundamentally frightening," Mapes writes. "I had never seen this kind of response to any story.
"It dawned on me that I was present at the birth of a political jihad."

That's only because the story itself was rare:
an 11th-hour attempt to influence an election using
ineptly (but criminally) faked government documents.
These people still do not get it. Rather is still
proclaiming that the story is true and that the docs
might yet be legit. His own mis-reporting of the
unmasking (he thought Buckhead was a web site) indicates
that he also has not personally checked the information
his staff provided him. He's living in la-la land
because people around him make sure he gets only la-la
information.
Mapes' reaction exhibits two of the main qualities of the MSM media: (1) their sense of entitlement and authority, i.e., that when they speak, they are to be believed and even obeyed; and (2) their unawareness of their own anger and hate, which they project onto conservatives. Conservatives tend to know when they're we're bad boys, but liberals' self-image prevents them from seeing the depths of their own hate.
Amazing. It's "frightening" to liberals when conservatives confront them about something they disagree with. But when liberals confront conservatives about something, liberals consider that to be "patriotism".
ROTFLMPO
(Rolling On The Floor Laughing My Pajamas Off)
EXCELLENT!
JeeeeeeeHaaaahhhhhaaaaaaddd !!!
Did she somehow forget she had aired FORGED DOCUMENTS????
Gee, I was just minding my own business, using forged, fake documents, trying to ensure the failure of the reelection of President Bush, using the power of the national mainstream media and press, airing the documents and issuing the story just before the election, and these mean conservative web sites started saying things, like how my forged, fake documents were "forged, faked documents!"
I'm saddenned...

Mary, Mary Mary...! I can't understand your rhetoric, calling FR part of a
"political jihad." Would that be something like the "sorosization" of America? (Confirmed as major part of the vast-left-wing conspiracy).
Mary,
Ahh...you never heard of doing research? Have you ever heard of looking at both sides of an issue? Have you ever heard of looking at what your opponents are saying? Did you ever stop to think that MIGHT be another side?
Mar, sweetie, you are supposed to be a professional. You appear to be, at this point, an unmitigated failure. See, you really should have taken a trip out of NY once in awhile, or at least tracked down the conservative in NYC.
Ha! Skypilot's a genius...(not)
I want my VRWC Tshirt, coffee mug, key chain and commemorative plate. Please let me know the full cost including shipping and handling.
Needless to say I think all freepers should take time to pause and chuckle with glee over her statement.
The "birth of a political jihad" was definitely earlier, as you state.
I have 2GigaBytes of political and aviation info dating from late in Bush'41 and the first days of the 'Toon presidency... using GOPHER, mostly, to access the web.
That was so much easier than EMail lists and FTP that came even earlier than that...
The birth came well before '96/'97 ... by '96 I recall laughing at the statement by the Old Mediots "we don't know whether we're going to cover the political conventions any more - they've just become paid political announcements"... my retort to my friends was, "in a few years, I'll be WATCHING them on the Internet", and this past year that is exactly what I did!
Semper FReep, Mary
Mary Mapes has a case of Sour Grapes, LOL. It seems she doesn't like it when the shoe is on the other foot; that is when conservatives exercise their free speech and it gets heard. Guess none of those liberal media loons are used to that. Too bad.
Oh poooooor baby....now she has got a taste of what most of us have been subjected to for the last half century. Especially by the hate-American First, Blame-America first MSM. I have absolutely NO sypmathy for her, she is one of the travelers in the group.
