Not perfect; but why would he do this when there were several names from which to pick.....unless it mattered not to him to pick a conservative/Constitutionalist?

DAMN. This pisses me off. There are HUGELY qualified, certified conservative jurists out there, including women, who are eminently more qualified than Ms. Miers. No doubt she's a fine lawyer, but when they have to cite the presidency of state and city bar associations as highlights of her career, it speaks volumes. She'll have a hard time getting a "qualified" rating from the ABA (not that I care much about the ABA). After Roberts, this seems like a bad joke.

I've been a staunch supporter of Bush, but I am DEEPLY disappointed. The most important issue for me in terms of domestic politics (i.e., not including keeping the terrorists out) is the composition of the Supreme Court. All the socialistic New Deal-type programs in the world, all the identity-politics pandering, all the pork, all the executive excesses--none of them pose a greater threat to the Constitution and our republic than federal Supreme Court justices "legislating" from the bench. The Court is the reason I started making political contributions to the Republican National Senate Committee--so it could regain the majority and confirm conservative judges and justices. Not so it could reward anonymous political functionaries.

I'm not just disappointed, I'm pissed. I hope I'm wrong about Miers, but this is the first time I've felt genuinely let down by Bush.

I do not know anybody who does think that.
But a person's position on abortion tells you an awful lot about THE CHARACTER OF THAT PERSON.

Where is it written that "women" are by definition required to marry and bare children?

Is that anything like the right to bare arms?

in 1987 & 1988. And Reagan used to vote Democrat too. What does this have to do with the price of tea in China. She's been straight Rep ever since.

Harriet may have had an awakening.

I think he'll have a hard time selling this to his base.

Bush doesn't need votes anymore - he couldn't care less about the "base". He's giving the Senate elite and his cronies what they want. Soon he'll be teeing off with daddy and brother Bill.

Bush... "she is compassionate.. she does pro bono work..."

JEEZ... we all criticized the moronic questioning of Sen. Feinstein in the Roberts hearings, but it appears spineless Bush has absorbed and caved in to the weepy willow judicial philosophy of the left. Yikes.

Maybe Bush picked her out of loyalty but knows she will never be confirmed. Perhaps he has someone else in mind but puts this woman out there first to let the dems do their chewing up and spitting out. Then when she doesn't get confirmed, he picks his REAL choice: the dems will look like obstructionists if they go after his second choice. The prez once again beats the dems at their own game. He has kept this ladys friendship, gotten his real choice, and once again pulled one on the dems. Just a thought.

The inevitable charges of cronyism, which apparently have already begun, will just damage his credibility. Future nominees will have a harder time getting through because of it. There's no strategery there.

"Bush knows her well, so I think we have to assume she is on the same wave-length."

- The choice is a real scream. Drudge has posted a thumb nail sketch of her background. First of all, by working closely with Bush for a number of years, he is satisfied that he really, really, knows she is a conservative. By never having been a judge, she has no record of written opinions that the left could use to bludgeon her with at the confirmation hearings. They are left with nothing to grab on to.
Bwahahahahaha!!! - Brilliant!

Well yes I guess he doesn't want a fight on the level of a Clarence Thomas hearing or something close to it.

A possible flaw in your theory: The Dems like her. She, according to one post, is on the do-not-filibuster list.

George Bush just surrendered the US Senate and the White House for a minimum of 10 years.

Then the GOP will have to lie to the Christian Conservatives again.

We won't fall for it after this.

The GOP died today, because Bush catered to the RINOs/Dummies.
