Harriet Miers
In 1988, Texas was still a predominantly Democrat state and Bentsen was the party-king. Bentsen also had a pro-business voting record and support from most high-dollar attorneys.
Also, the Gore who ran in Texas in 1988 was unlike the Gore of the 1990s and 2000s. Gore ran in the Democrat primary as a social conservative. I'm sure he was a total phony in 1988 - but who knew then.
None of the adjectives as to why seem to be complimentary, do they? And it surprises me not.
Well....I hope Carl is mistaken...we'll see. In my opinion....even a damn-democrat judge can follow the Constitution and NOT legislate from the bench.... After all...we do not know for certain whom our judges vote for....but we know their decisions....after the fact....which does cause me some indigestion problems...
My concern with the knee-jerk reaction today on FR is that we can sometimes sound like the wackos at DU..... Lets simply deal with facts and eliminate the emotion....
One poster said, "BUSH SUCKS"... Now that's not necessary!
Geesh...perhaps it's just a bad hair day or something. ;^)
How do we know that she's not a strict Constitutionalist, nic? Do you have evidence of that? Or are you believing the emotional, unsubstantiated rhetoric on this thread?
I meant that there would be a different nominee. Clearly that was wishful thinking on my part.
what is tony saying? i am extremely disappointed but refuse to countenance any of the histrionics that is par for the course on FR a lot of the time. i am interested in what someone like tony, that i trust and like is saying, i doubt he is disavowing the republican party and throwing a temper tantrum
Business week is a left-wing magazine. Of course they would attack Scalia and Thomas.
They are saying that because in the 80s, Miers or someone with her name donated to Gore, back in his pro-life days...
From the President's remarks, it appears she identifies herself as a Christian. Would that be moderate or a real one?
I don't know anything about Harriet Miers. I dare say none here know anything about her either, other than what their searches turned up.
I am, however, old enough to realize all is not what it seems, and being an optimist, will look forward to see how this plays out.
She's 60 and she is not J. Michael Luttig or Michael McConnell.
I'm feeling very Daschle about the whole thing.
I wonder if she ever ran an Arabian horse association.
Go right ahead .. and kiss everything of value you hold goodbye
I'm curious... what the heck would be wrong with actually picking someone who has a proven track record as a strict Constitutionalist? Because Ted Kennedy might not like it? We need a stealth nominee because we are concerned with what the Dems might do? We HAVE to choose someone with whom we don't know for sure? Just curious.
It does get tiring
She won a Sandra Day O' Connor Award.
That's reason enough to have serious reservations about this pick. I'd have expected someone young enough to serve for a generation, not a 60 year old.
