From Staff Reports
NORMAN -- An explosion near the University of Oklahoma's Gaylord Family-Memorial Stadium killed one person Saturday, OU officials said.

The explosion happened at the courtyard near the George Lynn Cross Hall, Botany-Microbiology Building on OU's campus, which is west of the stadium, according to Sgt. Gary Robinson of the University police department.

The explosion happened during the second quarter of Oklahoma's game against Kansas State.

After the explosion, police set up a perimeter of several blocks and made fans exit the stadium to the east.

That's interesting. Recommended to whom? Bush? Why would Bush have consulted with him?

The head of the person's fraternity disputed David Boren that this person was depressed.
I got to thinking. If this student was a depressed lone nut who just wanted to kill himself outside of the stadium to get maximum attention some things do not make sense.
The reports from police say the bomb was strapped to his body. I'll assume this was true. In that case.
Why the heck would he need a backpack. I can not imagine he carried the bomb in the backpack, removed it in a very public place and then strapped it on. If the bomb was not in the back pack- why would he need to carry it? To put some kind of message in? Public suicide seems like a pretty clear message that you think your life is hopeless.
No what makes sense is that the backpack (provided there were no explosives in it) was a diversionary device. From what you said the stadium was swept with bomb sniffing dogs. An unusual occurance from what you know of the game protocol. If a warning and I say IF was received I think campus and police authorities would have been hyper alert to any abandoned packages, backpacks, briefcases, purses etc. So while they are busy checking out the suspicious package what better time for a college student with a bomb strapped to mingle with crowds coming out of the stadium.
Yes I know it is pure conjecture. And even if his only intent was to kill himself he sure picked a spot that did not assure no others would be injured.
Plus I think we will find he will fit the profile of someone who gets angered by some perceived personal or political injustice and is attracted to radical groups.

The only thing I have "pounded" was places where I thought speculation was being labelled as "fact" (like when the fact of non-functioning cell phones turned into a "fact" that the cell phones had been disabled -- I still don't know whether they were or not, but there were reports of people using cell phones during the time, and there was no official confirmation of cell phones being disabled. That said, it makes perfectly good sense that the authorities would have disabled cell phone service after the incident, as part of normal protocol.).

I don't think we have facts yet to prove a 2nd bomb. I know there was an early report were someone in authority SAID there was another bomb, but people are known to make mistakes, and the current story (that stuff was blown up by the police) is a rational one.

It could be the new reports, when confirmed, will paint the picture of a student who fell under the influence of islamic terrorism -- but even those reports don't provide facts of a conspiracy, of multiple bombs, or of other accomplices.

I may well write about this, and if I do I don't want to state as fact anything that was really just speculation.

I am surprised this isn't getting covered like the boat accident. And contrary to my own statement, I guess I CAN believe the media is supressing the information, maybe because the government has asked them to, but I find it hard to believe the media would do anything helpful to the country. And I don't think they will supress this to keep the economy going, it would have to be a short-term supression.

It was hip or back surgery -- I forget which. I know I have seen him being driven around campus not walking.

Don't worry there are lot of behind the scenes conferences going on between authority's. They will get there stories straight.

Yea, I took that too far. I'm here because I'd like to sort the facts out so I can write about this.

You must be living in a cave?

Blair to curb human rights in war on terror

London Telegraph | August 6, 2005

Tony Blair served notice yesterday that he was ready to renounce parts of the European convention on human rights if British and European judges continued to block the deportation of Islamic extremists in the wake of the London bombings.

In a significant shift away from the human rights policies championed by Labour since 1997, Mr Blair indicated that he was no longer prepared to allow Britain to be a haven for Muslim extremists whose presence in London has resulted in its being dubbed "Londonistan".

He said he was prepared for "a lot of battles" with the courts, which have repeatedly intervened to prevent the Home Secretary from deporting "preachers of hate" and other foreign nationals regarded as a threat to national security.

"Should legal obstacles arise, we will legislate further, including, if necessary, amending the Human Rights Act in respect of the interpretation of the European convention on human rights," the Prime Minister said.

_______________________________________________

Also this - one of dozens that come up on a simple google:

In a massive crackdown on extremists following the London terror attacks, British authorities will deport in phases as many as 500 radical Muslims, out of which a dozen clerics will be sent to their homelands over the next two weeks. The move follows Prime Minister Tony Blair's announcement last week of a purge on terrorists and extremists.

Immigration officials have already been given a list of names, compiled by MI5, and told to begin proceedings. Among the first to be deported will be a dozen radical clerics. But hundreds of other foreign extremists, including some Islamic bookshop owners, writers, teachers and website operators will also go, the ''News of the World'' newspaper reported. "Just as the police operation over the past four weeks has been dynamic and fast-paced, so will our response," a senior home official was quoted as saying.

All 500 names have been taken from a "watch list" of extremists compiled over the past five years by the Intelligence Service. Their identities are being kept secret so that they will not be able to go into hiding or mount a legal challenge.

It is odd to me that dad asserted he thought of his son as a good boy; it implies that others might think he was not. In other words, father has been told by authorities that his son might have been involved with terrorists and they are investigating (how do you tell a father that his son blew himself up using a suicide vest and not ask father whether son was involved with Muslim terrorists?). If the son had committed suicide in a more traditional way, the father wouldn't need to defend his son's goodness, IMO.

Hi Liberal Hater. If you're from Britain, this is probably old news to you. You may want to take a look at this article, though, when you get a chance.

I thought they were not to release them either but I looked at an old one of my son's and it looks identical to that. Took me awhile but I found it. He got a new one when he became a grad student.

Really? It's been reported here that Britain is working towards stripping citizenship from Muslims that are promoting terrorism. The big road block so far is that some of their home countries are likely to kill them if they come back, so it's not a done deal yet.

It is definitely a weird way to commit suicide. It defies rationality, but suicide isn't a particularly rational thing to do using any method.
