somehow lost the confidence that his life would be a good one,

That sounds like conjecture as to why.

Especially since you don't even know that the kid's name has been published.

Hello, I said that no links were provided. But a poster here posted the name, phone#, and address. It got pulled, for good reason. The poster also gloated over the jewish sounding name.

I'd like confirmation from the powers that be:

1)Was he was without doubt the person who "caused" the boom.
2)Was He was an innocent bystander.

Which one is it?

I really don't think we have enough evidence to make an absolute determination. We've got a lot of pieces of what actually happened. We've got some pieces of a profile of the deceased. We know that there was a reasonably large explosion and that he's no longer among the living. We don't know if it was a premature detonation or not. We don't know if he had the bomb or not. We don't know if he intended for it to explode or not. We aren't certain if there was a second explosive device or not. We don't know if it went off at its intended destination or not.

Lots of things need to be put together here. The powers that be may or may not have some conclusions. They aren't sharing with the rest of us either way.

That thread was pulled. It is all good to question things like this. And I am done yet with this one. Something just does not add up.

When they had the alcohol poisoning at the Signma Chi house last fall, every sorority/fraternity on campus was told not to say a word about anything dealing with what happened. That lid was clamped down tight on the President's of all the Greek system. Cannot believe this President would take a phone call from a stranger and talk about the kid.

Thank you for the in-depth! Mixed up kid. [Feeling gloomy at least.] A mosque is apparently a block away. The mosque could be a coincidence, of course. So could the Mid East men like you said. And why would two Mid East men leave explosives that weren't encased in a halfway effective bomb? Kid sits on a bench. Boom. No crater because the explosives were elevated above the ground. Parts of body fly apparently a hundred yards. Someone feels his house shake a mile away. Bomb squads tear up the area.

All that going on and the media is quiet for so long.

... it is only a matter of time for another terrorist incident to occur on our soil. Therefore it is quite logical for us to be concerned about this incident, most particularly when early on, a student at the school and fellow Freeper reported the large angry Muslim population on campus.

Misdirection can be a wonderful thing. On another note, anyone know the nature of the patent held by Hinrichs I or II?

A few posts up someone mentioned they do allow purchase of ammo on EBay.

that may have been me - and I may be wrong. I don't think E-bay allows selling of ammo among individuals, but several retail outlets operate through e-bay. I do know that you can buy ammo on line as I've done so more than once.

Or making his/their way into the stadium and causing panic at the exits.

"Something's very wrong with this picture."

There are a number of questions that must be answered to validate the "lone nut" scenario:
1) Where did this kid obtain the high-grade explosives used in this bombing?
2) Did this kid do any test explosions anywhere to make sure his bomb would work? If not, why was his bomb so powerful on the first attempt, or did someone else give the bomb to him?
3) Did anyone who lived in his building notice that he was working with blasting caps, explosives, or written plans for a bomb? If not, when and where did he design this bomb, and if he didn't design it then who did?
4) Why did "authorities" tell an AP writer that the bomb was "attached to his body"? How could anyone know for sure that the bomb was attached to his body and he wasn't carrying the bomb?

There are a lot of unanswered questions in this case. Nothing can be ruled out based on what WE know at this time.

I agree. This would normally be the type of story the media would jump on with non-stop coverage. Fox probably broke the story with their usual gong alert -- yet less than 24 hours later it's completely off the radar screen and they are back to covering missing people tonight.

Just got this email:

Dear OU Students:

As you know, there was a tragic loss of life on campus during the
football game with Kansas State. I have been in constant contact with the
law enforcement agencies including the University of Oklahoma Police
Department as well as local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies
including the FBI. The joint law enforcement task force has issued a
public statement which says in part "we have no information that suggests
that there is any additional threat posed by others related to this
incident." The University has taken every possible action to ensure your
safety.

In light of the thorough nature of law enforcement efforts, we have
determined it safe and appropriate to resume classes tomorrow, Monday,
October 3, 2005. All classes will go forward as scheduled. I want to
express my personal appreciation to OU students, football fans, athletic
department staff, and supporters who have acted in such a responsible
way in response to this incident. I also want to thank law enforcement
agencies who made the safety of our students their number one concern
from the very moment this incident occurred. The way in which this
incident has been handled again demonstrates the strength of our university
community.

Sincerely,

David L. Boren
President

Your #4 stood out to me, too.

The AP report states the bomb was attached to his body. That leaves out the innocent bystander hypothesis.

Ummm, ugh. Just posting what I saw on another OU fanforum, claimed to have been told to the poster by a security person on scene:

~~~~~
[snip] ... "They said the only thing left of the guy was his legs and his wallet." ... [snip]
~~~~~

And did I miss seeing Hinrichs's mug shot posted here? It's on the OU Daily site.

Excellent questions. I think his passion for ammunitions might explain that he was knowledgeable and found a way to get these explosives. Of course, the details will be interesting if we ever know.

Late on a Saturday night is precisely when any incident would get the least media attention. And it's neatly bracketed by the Bali Bombing and the boat in Lake George overturning, and in addition you have a lot of media manpower still in Rita/Katrina damage territory.

No grand coverup or conspiracy, just a perfect storm of timing and circumstances leading to fairly limited coverage of the incident.

We once had a student at the HS where I taught show up with a pipe bomb in his pickup. (Yes, he got in big trouble with the law). Anyway, alot of kids thought he intended to blow up the school (I don't suppose a pipe bomb would do that, but I don't know alot about explosive devices). But, kids who knew him said he probably really did just forget it was there (as he said) because he used to make bombs to blow up things like tree stumps in the pasture near his house.
Maybe something country boys do.
