From Staff Reports
NORMAN -- An explosion near the University of Oklahoma's Gaylord Family-Memorial Stadium killed one person Saturday, OU officials said.

The explosion happened at the courtyard near the George Lynn Cross Hall, Botany-Microbiology Building on OU's campus, which is west of the stadium, according to Sgt. Gary Robinson of the University police department.

The explosion happened during the second quarter of Oklahoma's game against Kansas State.

After the explosion, police set up a perimeter of several blocks and made fans exit the stadium to the east.

The only fact that I am aware of is that something went boom, and somebody died

If that's all you know...you are way behind which is why you're confused. Keep reading.

"A few posts up someone mentioned they do allow purchase of ammo on EBay. However, the address thing is still a bit strange."

Could be a coded message too. EBay isn't necessarilly EBay. Could be a nickname, etc. I don't know much about frat houses, really. Ammo well, I guess there was ammo.

I agree. From the frat minutes offered, he sounded like a regular kid.

Something's very wrong with this picture.

Remember the black woman who was killed in the Olympics bombing? They well could have pinned this on her if Richard Jewell hadn't been an easier mark.

My report of the two Middle Eastern types running in was from a girl that saw them that comes from Iran. We heard her talking in the fraternity on the way to get our car and stopped to listen to her explanation of what she felt happened and how they were involved by their actions. It freaked us out. She was totally convinced they had something to do with it as it happens all the time over there. People make sure the bomb goes off and then take off. She made me a believer.

Haven't heard anything from the MSM. Wonder why.

"When I was in a fraternity, we were trained to never comment on anything to the press or outsiders. I think the zotted poster made it up."

A confirmation call would have been extra-kool. Perhaps it's time for the FR to reach the next level? Just a thought. If the board moderators could privately ask for phone numbers when calls like this are allegedly made, then "Whalla!" We are an even more incredible place, huh? Still got the possibility of pranks though. Some punk could claim he is what he's not over the phone. But it narrows the realm of mischief quite a bit.

Let's put it this way -- the body was supposedly blown into small pieces in the first news reports and by a couple of eyewitnesses after the blast.

According to the AP report and the post by a fellow student on the school's website (See Rte66's post above), this was an angry mixed up kid who was into weapons and ammunition. This may indicate it is an isolated incident specific to this one kid. And the two mideastern types seen running had nothing to do with this. BTW, 2 additional pieces of info: windows were broken in the area and a fellow student who states he was 70 yards from the explosion described it as a "percussive" feeling (posted on the The Oklahoman newspaper comments section).

When I was in college in the '70's, it was common knowledge in my BF's frat that a brother was into explosives. They were a little afraid of him. If they all knew, and my sister and I knew, how many other people knew? How many people at OU knew about Joel, particularly if he was talking about ammo in class? It would make him an easy mark to exploit.

That's why police and professionals have to take time to sort things out before making conclusions.

They might, but the big shots haven't in this case. The affair was only minutes old when they declared it an individual suicide.

Not confused. Willing to read and determine validity of published reports, over an anonymous blog post. Call me cynical. If the individual posting anonymously has credibility and tenure on the forum (reference PhiKappaMom and Buckhead) that is one thing. A quick search on JP, as well as a few other inquiries, indicate that the credibility is not upon the same scale. I may be wrong.

"Perhaps the press is waiting to see who moves on it first-- like a game of chicken. No one wants to be the first to stick their neck out first and posit the idea that this might have been a failed suicide bomber attempt.

But then, that never stopped the crazy-ass press from reported 10,000 dead in NO after Katrina. "

It is important to note that if a person walked out in public and announced they were killing themselves and blew themselves up in what was clearly a suicide, the MSM just MIGHT cover it as newsworthy. They certainly cover enough other worthless human interest stories involving death. The current event, clearly a much more suspicious circumstance, is not touched.

This implies the presence of an invisible hand influencing their decision to black this out, one which transcends their normal feeding-frenzy approach to news. Care to guess what that hand is?

Director of Homeland Security for Oklahoma refused to rule out terrorism and said the FBI was conducting a big investigation to fit the puzzle pieces together. He was on Channel 9 which said they will have an update at 10:00. All day long the story has been changing.

I may be wrong.

Yes, you may be. That's why "D*MN lies" may not be the best reaction to have immediately.

Especially since you don't even know that the kid's name has been published.

"If this guy planned on killing a bunch of people, he'd have taped nails to the outside of the bomb."

Not if he planned on blowing up a bus.

I was never in a fraternity, but using common sense, and perhaps a little decency...who would answer telephone questions from a stranger about a friend who had just been blown up under such circumstances?
Whether it was a suicide or not has not yet been factually proven, IMHO.
If the number of agencies supposedly involved in the investigation is true, I doubt we will "know" what happened here for at least a week.
The lack of media coverage is odd.

Thank you for the clarification. Let me say right now for the record, that every government official has stated that it is only a matter of time for another terrorist incident to occur on our soil. Therefore it is quite logical for us to be concerned about this incident, most particularly when early on, a student at the school and fellow Freeper reported the large angry Muslim population on campus.

21 is a bit young for the "Angry White Male" rif, but Hinrich met the profile in other respects so I would expect an explosion of MSM coverage any minute now (excuse the expression).
