Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VIII
www.freerepublic.com | September 24, 2005

Posted on 09/24/2005 9:58:36 AM PDT by Howlin

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

What was so stunning about the Canyon Lake wasn't a failure of the dam - but the spillway "doing what it was supposed to do".

I supposed though without the spillway it would have been much worse.

According to Harris County Judge and Houston Mayor, it was a wind event that created the problem at Lake Livingston.

I believe you are thinking of the Grand Teton Dam in Rexburg Idaho...

http://westjuneau.com/tetondam/

I believe that around 60 people died in the ensuing catastrophe.

The best thing about Canyon Dam is that now we know where the water will go if it goes over the spillway again.

That was quite a day around here at least we had time to move people out down stream.

That picture is from Laffite? That's weird..looked at it on a map..it's near a lake..Bayou Du Lac..but hard to figure where the water came from. (Unless the reporter made an error?)

Got a good buddy with a trailer at the East Tx fair in Tyler. Told him to bug out for a few days, but he and his wife decided to ride it out in their RV in a mobile home park. A lake across the road from them. Fair closed today except 4-h, ffa animal showings.

I have not had contact with him, any folks in the area know whats going on up in Tyler. Luckily it looks like Rita will move east and not stall over Tyler like first predicted--just the same weather dot com calls for thunderstorms all day today, but no rain amounts...so any word would be helpful from you Tyler Tx folks out there...

I also talked to a friend of mine earlier today. He picked up a FEMA load of ice on 9/9 headed for N.O. tried to deliver it to three FEMA stg sites had been sitting on it for a week, was reconsigned to put it in cold stg in Mass., only to be stopped and staged in Va. for two more days, redispatched to a holding pen for Rita and got notice this morning that he'll be directed to Houston. So far between line hauls and detention he says he's got $17,000.00 in charges not counting anything from today forward, for a load of frozen water worth $4500.00 if it melted...

True story? Not a friend of a friend type internet myth? If so then someone does need to deal with fema bureaucracy

ya think 200b is really gonna rebuild N.O.?

No, but it will give the corrupt local turd wurld gubermint some to play favorites with, and rebuild the welfare dependency their constituents are led to believe they so direly need.

As for your friend, he's lucky he got paid. That's definitely a show me da money proposition to sink that kind of overhead before payday.
Yike.
