Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

KPLC: These 4 anchors are the definition of people who are obviously very nervous trying to act calm . . . can hear "pounding" against wall . . .

Much to our benefit, and their detriment.

We haven't had a good looter season in quite a while.

Yep, and he'll get them, too. Next season will see them fight/flee from both the Colonials and the Cylons - you wait!

KPLC - "We just heard a large thump." Pretty amazing to hear this streaming audio under the circumstances. Sounds like they're facing some tougher winds shortly.

I heard he was going to Colorado tonight to the bunker. Wondered why, too. I hope it means absolutely nothing, but it is quite strange.

"I almost can't wait to see how the libs spin this -- went to an underground bunker to escape the 100,000 kooks rally in DC tomorrow.

Since you are already doing it, Carolyn. I'll just bet you can't.

Part of the problem with the evacuation is folks that were not in emanate danger left the city at the same time as those that live in the actual coastal area.

A co-worker that lives in Tomball was determined to leave Wednesday evening, even though Rita was not predicted to be here until late Friday/early Saturday.

Had the selfish people like her waited, it would not have taken people (like my brother) 20 hours just to get to Tomball.

Kentucky schools already announed a four-day school week, Georgia closing schools two days next week. Personally, I recommend we go to five-days-a-week mail delivery... IMHO we'd save a lot of energy and money by cutting out Saturday delivery.

When you hear footsteps on the second floor of your home, know for certain there is no one up there and can't see anyone, you gotta wonder where the noises came from.

I know I didn't imagine them. Other folks heard the noises too.

And before you ask, they couldn't be from the house settling.

That's what I had heard as well - That Bush was heading to CO Springs to see first hand the response of our military.

There is inner eye, outer eye, I don't know what it means, but the second one is the one that is the carnivore, and the second one since the storm is still moving slightly west (maybe), will be father west than the outer wall. And then it moves north to northeast Texas, and stalls, and dumps two feet of rain over five days, trapped between two high pressure zones. Maybe that is hyperbole. More probably, nobody knows. This storm has been very confusing.

Fly, Jerry, fly!

Would you folks refrain from the nasty comments about the Fox anchors? Trying to read a thread and get information, and every other post is some smart*** remark about Geraldo or Shep blowing out to sea. First 100 or so were humorous, after that it just looks tacky.

New Orleans is going to have longer term effects on the country. Houston's going to get messed up and Galveston is going to be beat pretty bad, but casualties will be extremely low and since everyone had plenty of time to get out, we're not going to have a new SuperFund site when the storm leaves.

The TN gas pipeline isn't likely to have problems anyway. That comes out of North Texas.

That is not a good omen. It is a great omen, if you have ice. And a little water back.

Sorry, Armsted, I do not have the same faith in the process that you have, but how I hope you are right, and I am totally out to lunch.

I see history as cyclical, alas. And, I am therefore depressed. Probably because I read "The Fourth Turning", and I think this is the trigger.

We are in for an interesting 20 year ride. Hang on folks, for it will be a real cliff-hanger.

It's in a really cool bottle with a little pewter statue of a jockey riding his racehorse adorning the cork... black wax seal... uh... I think it's just begging to be opened.

Yes, amazing. The anchors don't look comfortable at all. But they're doing an admirable job staying calm on the surface.

Wind gusts of over 130 from a boat "in the channel".
