Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 22 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/22/2005 5:44:09 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Category Four Hurricane Rita continues to move toward landfall along the northwest Gulf of Mexico shoreline. Mandatory and voluntary evacuations continue across Texas and Louisiana coastal areas. Lake Charles LA is providing evacuations by bus for residents who have no transportation.

Traffic gridlock in the greater Houston area was compounded by gasoline stations without fuel, long lines at those stations still carrying fuel, and record breaking temperatures on the first day of autumn.

Offshore drilling platforms and rigs, as well as oil refineries, petrochemical and natural gas plants are in the path of the storm. Wave heights recorded by buoy have exceeded 38 feet. The refineries threatened by Hurricane Rita are on higher ground than those affected by flooding from Katrina. As a result, speculation abounds regarding future prices for winter heating fuel and gasoline.

From your keyboard to God's "Palm Pad"!

God Bless the State of Texas. We in NYC will never forget the generosity of Texans after 9/11.

The storm was originally supposed to hit further south.

Guntersville Lake has been my secret evacuation spot when my family and I evacuate New Orleans. Everything else fills up for miles, all the way to Memphis, when a hurricane threatens our area. I love it up there in the mountains.

Was Troy Dungan an Oklahoma met at one time? His name sounds so familiar. Or maybe here in Houston?

He wears a bow-tie. Does that ring a bell?

MSNBC just said that rita has made turn for LA,,,is that true???

The models are all over the place, and the official 3-day cone has this thing making landfall between Port Arthur and the east end of Galveston Bay. With that said, almost half the cone is in Louisiana.

It will pass. When we thought Emily might hit we were out helping our neighbors, patiently waiting in line.... Now it's back to ignoring each other, running lights, honking horns, cutting each other off, one finger saluting.....normal kinds of stuff:')

Galveston will be just fine.

Yeah, if you're a flying fish. Worst case, winds plus 15+ storm surge plus 20 foot waves. Best case, 130 mph winds. What a stupid remark; it's more than likely to be like Gulfport, Biloxi, etc. when Rita's done with it.

I cannot believe that people are going crazy at the grocery stores up here in the Metroplex.

It seems highly unlikely that we will have power or water shortages.

OTOH, I have filled up both cars in the last two days.

It's never a *good* day to be a looter in TX, but it's just gotten a lot worse. See the Texas code on "civil unrest" and "state of emergency".

I will put it this way....

I sure hope so...I hope they are Houstonians or others from that area...that have finally made it and need to refuel...

I just have a feeling though, that quite a few were locals, that probably won't be doing much for the next 4 days, but decided they would just go out and top off their tanks...

BTW...I just heard on the local radio news that Hobby and Bush Airports will be closed at noon tomorrow...and that I-45 is one-way all the way to Ennis from the Gulf.
