If you are in the path of this storm, please sign in here, so that the rest of us can keep track of our "displaced" friends and family.
And when you return, remember to sign in, as we will be looking for you!
Not sure how many libs are around my area (620/Anderson Mill)...sure see a lot of W bumperstickers!
Off to the store to see if they restocked water and grab some chocolate for Jaded!
Update: the wimmin and children made it to Lake Charles OK,
But now they're executing "Plan B" and evacuating north to stay with friends of my sister-in-law's family. At least they're out of the congested Houston area traffic.
My one brother decided it was idiotic to fight traffic to go to work for a halfday, so he's home taking care of finishing touches on his home. His wife (the sister-in-law who stayed) still has to work at the bank until 7, but hopefully might get out earlier.
The other brother just stopped by. He's still planning on stopping in at the office. (He's the boss, so if nothing else, he has to be there to tell the employees to leave by noon.) The good news there is that he doesn't commute very far to work, so even with heavy traffic, he should be able to get back before my sister-in-law gets out of the bank. Looks like we're probably headed NW to get out of the direct path. Coworker of first brother home has ranch in "Hill Country" (wherever the hell that is) has a guest home where we can stay.
Options are under constant review as information develops.
Give your cats a hug from my three Siamese. Stay safe, and we'll pray for your fiance.
"Texans know how to react and y'all have leadership that's competent."
The continuing comment about Texans having learned from the NOLA experience really irritated me, too. I saw Governor Perry on ABC this morning, being interviewed by ??? The interviewer made the same comment; Governor Perry replied along the lines of...well, actually we've been practicing for this type of thing for the last four years. Ha!!!
BLESS TEXAS!
Meanwhile, here we sit waiting to be mauled by Mother Nature and all our resources went to NO. For 3 weeks there hasn't even been a generator in town! Our city gov't had to go 100 miles yesterday to get one to keep our water pumping--if needed. Our hotels were already full and our churches are still feeding --two meals per day--people from NO.
This morning they are saying we could have 125 MPH winds for 10 hours.
I have a bed-ridden mother with Alzheimer's. It's too late to leave. I'm scared!
And frankly, I think it would be better if this thing went in to NO because it would be better than destroying what's still standing.
Here we go again! Please sign in if you or anyone you know are in Rita's path, and be sure to check in when it is over as we worry about you all! (y'all!)
Signing in from Cypress, TX. Looks like ground zero is Beaumont now. I will be at home watching it.
You're sure?
And the risks and stress of evacuating for them now IMO outweigh the very minimal chance that they could still catch the westernmost fringe of hurricane winds - especially since their house is 12 feet above sea level, inland over a mile and built to withstand a borderline Cat3/Cat4 storm. It's probably safer than a hotel now.
So my titanium-craniumedfather dodges another bullet...
Looks like we might be in better shape now here in College Station. The latest maps have 6-12" of rain though, and power loss in isolated area.
We are still hangin' tight in College Station.
I posted on the Rita IV thread that I had checked the grocery stores this morning & the shelves were empty of many things.
However, HEB did have a fresh shipment of water. Ice was available, too. But that was a couple of hours ago.
Gas is still available for the most part. Cars waiting in line about 10 deep in some places.
The latest indications seem to point that Rita has taken a slight eastward tilt towards deep east Texas.
BTTT
As soon as I can leave today, I need to try and find some ice. However,at least now it looks like it will be more for keeping a beer or two cold instead of my entire freezer for a prolonged period. This town has gone a little crazy.
We are still staying put in Houston off of Chimney Rock. Now we have people coming over from Beaumont to stay with us. Not sure we are a great alternative but it is really fixing to get bad with Liberty and Jefferson counties mandatory evacuating people. They can't really head toward LA because of the Katrina evacuees so they are headed north or towards Houston.
But, my B-I-L, Presley (yes, he was named after Elvis) said "Oh, man. We got plenty beer, and I'm gonna boil some crawfish tonight, so we'll have plenty to eat. We'll make it just fine."
Crazy cajuns. As long as there's food and beer, they ain't worried about nuthin'!
I bought a bag of ice at Albertson's - the one by the WalMart.
Check there. However this was about 8:30 AM and the bin was a little less than half full.
Am here in Dallas, all Houston relatives evacuated (wow, even the knuckleheads!)
I hope you are not going to Lake Charles anymore. They will be taking a direct hit.
