Q&A with Roberts to Start
On Tuesday, the eighteen members of the Senate Judiciary Cmte. begin questioning Chief Justice nominee John Roberts. This will take all day, with the senators asking their questions, up to a half-hour for each member, in order of seniority, alternating by party.

The Schedule (media advisory)

Tentative Schedule for the Hearing: Schedule is subject to change

Tuesday, Sept. 13

9:30 am Chairman Specter begins 30 minute round of questioning (Round 1)

1:00 pm Break for lunch

2:00 pm Resume questioning

6:00 pm Break for dinner

7:00 pm Resume questioning

The Dem playbook

The Hill newspaper gives us a peek at the Democratic playbook for the Roberts hearings. Below are the attack assignments for the Democratic members of the Committee:

Kennedy -- civil rights

Leahy -- Bybee torture memo

Biden -- privacy, personal autonomyand the 9th Amendment

Kohl -- Property rights and civil liberties

Feinstein -- "judicial activism" and Roe vs. Wade

Feingold -- limits of executive powers

Schumer and Durbin have wisely refused to show their hand.

which is why conservatives are always friendlier people.

Conservatives want to share knowledge with others. Left wing liberals want to tell you what you MUST think.

Exactly. Either there is a rule of law or there is not. Our moral principles are not a substitute for the law. (Hopefully they support each other, but not necessarily.) Lawyers have to be able to argue both sides in order to effectively argue their side. No big deal, unless the lawyer becomes an "opinion" leader in a particular area, e.g., Gay Rights. We want judges who follow the law not create it. That is the litmus test.

I'll go out on a limb and say Leahy, Kohl and Feinstein would be the only three that might vote for confirmation.

Found this:

2003 Judiciary Committee Vote When the U.S. Senate was considering Judge John Roberts’ confirmation to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, the Senate Judiciary Committee actually recommended his confirmation in two separate votes.

Later, the Senate confirmed Roberts to his seat on the D.C. Circuit by unanimous consent. Here's a breakdown of the Committee members' votes. (Note especially the Democrats backing Roberts' confirmation.)

Judiciary Committee Vote on February 27, 2003:
Democrats Voting For Roberts:
Biden
Kohl
Feinstein
Edwards

Democrats Voting Against Roberts:
Kennedy
Schumer
Durbin

Democrats Abstaining:
Leahy
Feingold

Republicans Voting for Roberts:
Hatch
Grassley
Specter
Kyl
DeWine
Sessions
Graham
Craig
Chambliss
Cornyn

Judiciary Committee Vote on May 8, 2003:
Democrats Voting For Roberts:
Leahy
Biden
Kohl
Feinstein
Feingold
Edwards

Democrats Voting Against Roberts:
Kennedy
Durbin

Democrats Not Voting:
Schumer

Republicans Voting for Roberts:
Hatch
Grassley
Specter
Kyl
DeWine
Sessions
Graham
Craig
Chambliss

That's why I think he might. They have to know that we are not all crazy out here.

Feingold is positioning himself as the looney Left's alternative to Hillary! Hence he will vote no.

do I claim 0 or 1

Some say 0, because then you get money back and never owe them additional taxes. However, you are letting the government have your money on which they pay no interest. Not a good deal. It's up to you, and congratulations, btw.

I would absolutely swoon if The President nominated Btown, but I really don't think it is a shoo-in that he will nominate a woman.

There are so many very good conservative candidates he could choose.

I think that it would be good if he nominated Luttig, though ---

Then publicly suggest strongly that Souter or Stevens ought to swftly resign from the USSC to open up a seat that he can nominate a woman to replace THEM - and vow that he would nominate a woman for THAT seat.

When you've got a name like Schumck
You've got to be good, or have luck.
But when your name is Schumer,
It is certainly no rumor:
You're only a Putzhead, dear Chuck.

She has reason to despise those people. Their hands were in on that "investigation" of her children's adoption.

Wouldn't it be funny if she let Jack get up and dance in the middle of one their bloviating nasty diatribes?

too late.

That model only leads to the "ratchet effect". When conservatives are dominant then nothing changes. When leftists are dominant then everything pushes left. The result is only a leftward push.

We MUST start pushing back to the right. Then and only then will precident matter. We must correct the wrong decisions in order to make the correct decisions.

"--that the rudeness of Kennedy and Biden are not playing well with Mr & Mrs John Q."

Except the MSM will edit so that the rudness/pigstyle questioning will look like Roberts is evading. It will be sound bites thrown out in the evening news.

That is how most of the dems I know get their opinions. OTOH, the republicans I know are news junkies.

IMO, it depends on your outside income, e.g., 1099s. Best bet is 0 unless you are in a real cash flow bind.

That is what I was taught, if I ever decide to go to law school I hope that I do not jettison my morals, but giving legal advice and moral guidance can be two different fish.
