Waters were receding across this flood-beaten city today as police officers began confiscating weapons, including legally registered firearms, from civilians in preparation for a mass forced evacuation of the residents still living here.
No civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to carry pistols, shotguns, or other firearms, said P. Edwin Compass, the superintendent of police. "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons," he said.
But that order apparently does not apply to the hundreds of security guards whom businesses and some wealthy individuals have hired to protect their property. The guards, who are civilians working for private security firms like Blackwater, are openly carrying M-16's and other assault rifles. Mr. Compass said he was aware of the private guards, but that the police had no plans to make them give up their weapons.
Nearly two weeks after the floods began, New Orleans has turned into an armed camp, patrolled by thousands of local, state, and federal law enforcement officers, as well as National Guard troops and active-duty soldiers. While armed looters roamed unchecked last week, the city is now calm. No arrests were made on Wednesday night or this morning, and police received only 10 calls for service, a police spokesman said.
The city's slow recovery is continuing on other fronts as well, local officials said at a press conference late this morning. Pumping stations are now operating across much of the city, and many taps and fire hydrants have water pressure. Also, tests have shown no evidence of cholera or other dangerous diseases in flooded areas, though health officials have said the waters contain levels of E. coli bacteria and lead 10 times higher than what is considered safe.
Efforts to recover corpses have also started, although only a handful of bodies have been recovered so far.

Astute observation.
Only because the police are taking "illegal" weapons. They support the taking of legally owned weapons.
Noticeably absent are the FR jackboots, they are probably lurking.

What? That may be the clueless statement of the thread. The levees are largely repaired. Electricity is being brought up all over the city, The water supply is coming up, and the sewers are working in a large part of the town. As for the "toxic water" Stay the hell out of it.
I was refering to the stupid actions of the government not the conditions of the area. People wanting to stay in their homes is helped by the improving physical conditions and stupid actions of their government. Maybe you should slow down and recognize your target before you pull the trigger and start calling people clueless....

IMHO the rub is state versus federal. There is not currently a mechanism in place that requires the registration of a weapon that crosses state lines in a civilian trunk. Certainly there is no requirement for crossing county lines in Texas. Personally, I do not care how they do it in New York, California, or Illinois. And I d@mn sure do not want a federalized referendum that could allow Yankees or Sand Yankees to have any say whatsoever about what I may own, control, purchase,manufacture, reload, modify, or have knowledge of.
Maybe somebody should contact BATF and tell them that some people in NO posess pre-ban receivers AND the machining equipment inclusive of dimensions for sears, disconnects, and illegal suppression devices. The fires will make fantastic evening news. All they gotta do is say that these otherwise upstanding denizens might be molesting chirren.

No, SOME are; and they are in Iraq or Afghanistan. They're the top tier of Blackwater and others; 10yrs green beret / seals / detla experience. I would bet that many of the clowns in NO right now are nothing but out of work prison guards, military / etc.

Bubba Tier? What does that mean?
No problem, my previous posts showed where I was coming from but were not spelled out/included in that post...
The "Bubba Tier" are ex-correctional officers and small town cops who work for Blackwater et. al. in Iraq. They generally have little training and are out of shape. They perform some "less" dangerous and/or demanding jobs and generally make less coin. But, they will make more than what they could in the states.

uncalled for. The gun was limp in her hand all they had to do was take it from her not knock her over and jump on her. She wasnt aiming it at anyone. Poor lady. I guess I just dont understand this fully. What are the boundaries of the evacation? The whole of New Orleans, even the dry areas? Why not the other parishes of LA that have water? They should be out saving the dogs and cats instead of knocking old ladies over. Health issues? Any large group of people who btw were not in that area when they got sick, will have health issues. Why do they let the other folks stay in their homes? [Maybe there is a plan to take all that land, raise it up and stick a shopping mall or a a casino on it *Ulta paranoid* I know, the black cop knocked her over cuz she is white sharp shooter Annie Oakley? Ridiculous!
