I think you all might be right I may have thought it was Souter when it was Breyer. It's not like we see much of them.

Usage question. On Fox, I believe I heard an anchor say he was going to lie "in state" and then correct himself and say he is to "repose". Can any Freeper fill me on on the linguistic hair splitting. Shades of 'gravitas' !

Great question, wish I knew the answer. I need to find my expert on such things!

It will be interesting. The whole story of the two already drips with symbolism. The clerk carring the casket of the man whose seat he will take.

Lying in "repose" is when the remains of a deceased person, often one of some stature, are available for viewing by the public.

This is different from "lying in state," the latter term refers to a formal honour, generally in the principal government building of a country and accompanied by an honor guard.

Also, (I am not sure) I believe that a public figure lying "in state" must be in the Rotunda of the Capitol Building, in addition to the definition listed above.

Is Souter's health OK? Only reason I can think that he may have been given a pass.

"Is Souter's health OK? Only reason I can think that he may have been given a pass."

I think Souter is suffering from liberal partisan politics.

The lady in question appears fairly tall and strong, so no reason why she shouldn't. Too great a disparity in the bearer's heights, so they couldn't easily carry the casket on their shoulders.

I have not checked to confirm, but dollars to donuts it is Maureen Mahoney.

She is a fine advocate. Easily one of the best in the country.

Thanks. As one of his former clerks, she OUGHT to be there.

I just wondered who it might be, she seemed to do fine although she had to throw her right arm out for balance. I can't imagine being a pallbearer in heels, I would probably fall over. She did seem to be a good match in height for the other pallbearers.

Thanks, that is true, I can name all nine, well, now eight of them. That's something I guess. :)

I was flipping thru channels the other night and couldn't believe on the Letterman show he was making a joke about Renquist!~ I emailed the show about what poor taste it was and that I hoped when Letterman's mom passed some moron didn't use her death for a laugh! It really pi--ed me off. And in the 5 minutes I watched he of course made 2 or 3 Bush bashing jokes so when I emailed I said I had stopped watching for that reason. He has ceased being funny and instead is just full of hate and venom and that was why he isn't funny any more. Did anyone else see the show?

Rest in peace, sweet prince. This man wrote the dissenting opinion on Roe v. Wade. God bless.
