Newsreaders on FoxNews just said a 'Senior administration spokesman' has said Bush plans to nominate Roberts for Chief Justice position.

Conservatives do NOT appoint people based on seniority, "fairness" or some form of a affirmative Action program, or at least they shouldn't.
I like Thomas and Scalia. I don't think Thomas wanted it. Scalia did. But it is the President's job to appoint not only someone that is brilliant, but to consider age and ability to pull a form of unity from the members on the Court. This is why Roberts was rumored for awhile now to be his preferred choice for CJ.
Consider Kenndy on the Court. His opinion has become a "swing" vote, someone that could perhaps reach out to him and pull him back would be an asset. Clearly Rehnquist hasn't been well enough to do that, Stevens has been caring for his duties off the record for awhile. That has left O'Connor of all people exerting influence on him.
Until we have a third opening Kennedy will become the "swing" vote and it is extremely important if there is the slightest possibility, that he be convinced to return to steadier solid opinions.
Media is being overloaded...bewteen Katrina and all the SC stuff, OJ could publicly confess to the murders, and no one would give a darn..
Wait, wait wait, hold on...what's the lovely woman's name? Political affiliation, approximate age, how far along the politcal line is she (conservative, liberal, moderate, some weird combination of both or all three), need the info.

Seriously, Martha Stewart's whole empire has been built on bringing to the wider population the cooking, decorating, gardening, etc traditions of the stuffy old East. She saw a good thing [pun] and capitalized on it.
Roberts clerked for Rehnquist back when he was still an Associate Justice, so he doesn't necessarily know how Rehnquist ran the court as CJ (except from the perspective of being a friend of his).

Of course, but that's not going to stop the RATS from jumping up and down, turning red, and whining about how Bush is not "playing fair," has ignored the "time-honored system of seniority," is "railroading" his candidate through in his attempt to "stack the court" and avoid "a bi-partisan candidate everyone can feel happy about", and on and on ad nauseum.
Which would be a nice bonus - provided she is the best conservative choice. It would be shortsighted in my opinion to simply to nominate someone who could be confirmed, for a posting that will last a lifetime. Bush would be accused, with a degree of accuracy, of trying to politicize the court process. And John Breaux has already recommended Clement on Fox this morning - I am not sure what to make of that.
I see a chance for Bush to re-connect with the millions of Americans who voted for him by going back to a key focus of his campaign. I hope he re-frames the national debate with the new pick to replace O'Connor.
I am on record as supporting Janice Rogers Brown and continue to do so.

There is currently no nominee for the O'Connor vacancy.
I think you meant to say "IF Roberts is CONFIRMED for Chief Justice".....he was nominated this morning. Yes, he will replace Rehnquist and yes, O'Connor will remain until her successor is confirmed.
I agree. We don't know enough about Roberts to be appointing him CJ!

Looks like W just wants to get some of this 'over with', rather than go through 3 appointments/hearings/votes.
I prefer Scalia, but I imagine he just wants to avoid an additional fight. Still, I think CJ should have high court exerience (ruling experience).

I'm disappointed because I see Roberts as a calculating opportunist (sorry, he just reads that way to me). But not seeing Scalia or Thomas lynched by the left is a tempting reward.
I would think that it's an honor to be CJ, though, and I think Scalia deserves it. Or Thomas.
I'd bet Roberts learned more than you are giving him credit for. Management styles are consistent and learning them is long lasting and becomes inherent to the person taught. Add in, Roberts remained friends with Rehnquist since his clerkship and it would not surprise me that Roberts would run things pretty much the same way Rehnquist did. Of course, there's no way I can prove that, and it would be interesting to hear from some people who have worked for Roberts to get their take on it.

I love that the President has chosen Roberts for the simple fact that he's young, and will provide much bang for the buck.
I was trying to give Roberts as much credit as possible for knowing the Rehnquist leadership style.
But when he actually worked for Rehnquist, Rehnquist was an Associate Justice and Burger was the Chief Justice.
Maybe he picked up on Burger's style of running the court. :o
