The breach in the 17th Street Canal levee that had put the city of New Orleans underwater was essentially closed early Sunday evening after days of work and the use of "ingenuity to the max," a top U.S. Corps of Engineers general said.

Do you suppose that it depends on the level or the sequence of the response you are hoping for?
If I were to guess, I would say they won't pump water into the lake, but just into the river, where it can be washed out to the ocean and diluted.
I would also say that every pump they can put on this they should. Who cares if most of them do very little, they will be better than nothing. Even a few dozen fire pumpers might help at this point. Heck, even just turning "fountains" on to spray the water into the air will help it evaporate more. Also spraying water onto the fires would both help dampen the fires AND evaporate a lot of water.

The pumps will get about 10% of the water out when they wear out and break down.I don't think much about this author's evaluation on the reliabilty of NOLA's pumps; the A. B. Wood screw pumps are remarkably simple and have little to 'wear' - we are talking LOW head pressures here, virtually NO seals (perhaps a simple packing gland around the drive shaft) and a REALLY long life - PUMPS from the 1915 appear to STILL be in service ...
In short, this author does not know the specifics of the NOLA 'pumps'.
I hereby submit a request for those figures. And don't be stingy with the diagrams and schematics.

(BTW, you did know that storm water is removed from the city into Pontchtain via the canals? Initally and during light 'sweeping' rains they route the 'foul' water to Bayou Bienvenu, below the city, and thence into Lake Borgne. This prevents the pollution of Lake Pontchartrain with 'garbage'.)

That's the second report from an eyewitness - well, technically heresay - but I wonder if anyone has reported this possibility to the authorities.
