Regular communications generally fail in a Major Hurricane, that is why we always have SW People camped out in the PD Communications office to take over should it fail. Where I worked we had the SW guy, his wife, kids and cats holed up. We needed him, and that was the deal.

I received word last night that the American Red Cross has been asked to leave the Greater New Orleans Area because of their ineffectiveness.

Make sure you post this incredible find on NN's thread where it will remain for future reference. Or better yet, post it as a separate thread, too.

Timmy was saying the same thing to Chertoff - why didn't you bring in planes, trains, and busses.

Did Timmy forget that a Category 5 Hurricane hit not just LA .. but several other States???

Those transportation routes were either destroyed, block and rec'd heavy damage

It may have been mentioned on 1 of the shows, but I didn't hear it (Breau may have addressed it - didn't hear what he said on Wolfie's show except something about not enough money for the levees). I wouldn't be surprised if the LSM and the Dims start hammering on this as I've heard it a few other times this week from the Dims and their talking heads. One thing we need to be prepared for is 'Bush cut the budget for the levees'. I seem to recall that some have said that the levees are only built for a CAT 3, continuing to throw money at them isn't the best idea, and, that NO used some of the money for them to build a casino and other things.

Did a search on google to see what I could find.
Here's what I found on wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funding_for_hurricane_preparedness_of_New_Orleans

A category 5 hurricane directly striking New Orleans was calculated to be a one in 500 year event by the Army Corps of Engineers [1]. The Corps of Engineers, along with Louisiana State University (LSU), and the authorities in Jefferson Parish have modeled the effects and aftermath of a Category 5 strike on New Orleans. The outcome was an unprecedented disaster, with extensive loss of life and property. The key problem is an effect called "filling the bowl", when the hurricane drives water into Lake Pontchartrain, which overwhelms weaker levees bordering Pontchartrain and canals leading to it and flows into the below-sea-level city accompanied by water overtopping the levees along the Mississippi on the south side of the city center.

In September 2002, the American RadioWorks aired a documentary, Hurricane Risk for New Orleans, describing the modeling efforts at LSU, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Jefferson Parish Emergency Management Center, the results, and possible long-term solutions. The official budget was highlighted as being far below requirements and is already being considered for increase. There has been criticism of the funding for hurricane preparedness of New Orleans.

<snip

The adequacy of funding for hurricane preparedness of New Orleans has been questioned in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Since 2001, many U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requests for hurricane protection projects have been cut back or delayed. Critics charge that these cutbacks were a direct result of funding for the Iraq war and the Bush Administration's tax cuts. Others argue that it is common for projects like these to be underfunded and even had the remaining 25% of funding requests been filled, it would not have helped New Orleans withstand a category 4 hurricane.

Southeast Louisiana Project funding:

2004:
Army Corps request: $11 million
Bush request: $3 million
Approved by Congress: $5.5 million
2005:

Army Corps request: $22.5 million
Bush request: $3.9 million
Approved by Congress: $5.7 million
2006:

Bush request:$2.9 million

This is on the Democrat Party Web site:
http://www.democrats.org/a/2005/09/funding_cuts_he.php

Look, this isn't about partisanship. It's about genuine accountability for the short-sighted choices they made. This administration has escaped accountability for its mistakes far too often.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune has covered the budget cuts in multiple stories for the past two years, and Will Bunch sums up the coverage in Editor & Publisher:

That montage of pictures should be shown to every person that trashes President Bush instead of bemoaning the ineptness of the LA mayor.

I agree. Ever since he was elected, W has felt that
actions speak louder than words. Rise above it, etc.

However, someone in the administration better wise up
that the media is not reporting his actions honestly,
and a lot of damage is being done to W's character.

It's time to fight back and fight hard.

There is absolutely nothing they won't politicize. I used to think there might be some limits to this approach, but this past week proves there are no limits...they will exploit anything for personal and political gain and to diminish President Bush. Tragedy is not beyond that, and the fact is they do not care about the suffering of the victims, or anyone. Sad but true.

The head guy from the Corps of Engineers said the other day that none of the plans for which money was being requested included the two levees that broke. They were as good as they were going to get.

Some actor whose name I don't know (he was shown later on FNC playing makeshift bowling with kids in a shelter) said he knew a man who lived near the levee and said it was a barge.

I don't know where barges are kept, but surely if the MS casinos could be "uprooted" and shifted by the storm, barges could.

Widipedia has this pic on their site (toward bottom of this page) with the caption: Flooded New Orleans school buses that could have been used for evacuation:

I posted this last week, but it bears repeating IMO:

'Stephie' is 'gonna join with Landrieu in blaming it all on Bush. Collins & Lieberman are already getting ready for an inquirey to find what 'went-wrong'.

Let them .. Because it's a pretty sure bet the Officials of LA won't like Congress digging into their business and their books about all that went wrong

If Nagin had just have done what he was supposed to, he would be a hero today, instead of a fool.

You're right. Even if he had failed, a credible effort would have made him a tragic hero.

Oh you mean like the 1998 request to the Clinton Administration for fund to raise the levees to survive a level 5 Hurricane that was rejected by the Clinton Administration as "not cost effective"? IT IS about WHOLLEY about Partisanship. Everything is on the Left is these days. So if the Left is so intrested in the BLAME game. I refer you to the Sun Sept 4th Washington Post. Why has the Bush Administration been asking the State of Lousiana to releace control over rescue and recovery efforts to Federal Authorites since Friday Night? The state is still refusing. So if this is All Bush's Fault" why are the Feds STILL not in charge as of RIGHT now? Or aren't we allowed to hold the Democrat Administration of the STate of Lousiana or the City of NO accountable?

Maybe he does not know the law (russert) and that is why he is not a Practicing lawyer. He probably is a really lousy lawyer and chose Journalism because you don't have to be really smart or studious to go that route. We have all been trying to tell Rush what a partisan hack schmuck that Russert is, and above that he is a a girly man. He let Hillary lock his privates away in the lockbox until their interview was over, it was so disgusting, i have not watched since.
