At one point Friday, the evacuation was interrupted briefly when school buses rolled up so some 700 guests and employees from the Hyatt Hotel could move to the head of the evacuation line much to the amazement of those who had been crammed in the stinking Superdome since last Sunday.
"How does this work? They (are) clean, they are dry, they get out ahead of us?" exclaimed Howard Blue, 22, who tried to get in their line. The National Guard blocked him as other guardsmen helped the well-dressed guests with their luggage.
The 700 had been trapped in the hotel, next to the Superdome, but conditions were considerably cleaner, even without running water, than the unsanitary crush inside the dome. The Hyatt was severely damaged by the storm. Every pane of glass on the riverside wall was blown out.

Looks like another post and run.
No. If people are threatening to kill you, you climb on the priority list. If it's your car, get in it and get out.
Maybe it has something to do with the Hyatt people not shooting at the rescuers?
I can. It is simple THOSE are the tourists who are going to come back to the rebuilt NO.
THOSE are the people who DON't need help once they are out of the area. They go back to their undestroyed lives.
When THEY are OUT OF THE WAY those resources they were taking up to go to those who have to remain in Katrina disater areas.
If the those people leave TX and LA. Then they are not the worry (or drain) on rescue efforts.
Leftist relatives visited.
When I mentioned that I have an arsenal for protection, the woman gasped! "I think such things are best left to the police!" she exclaimed.
"I don't think so," my wife responded. "How long do you think it would take the police to get here?"
These are the same people who think we should have open borders ("because I think anybody who wants to come to this country to better themself should be allowed to and blah blah blah"), hate Mexicans ("my father said they were worthless and blah blah blah"), acknowledge that California is rapidly sinking beneath the weight of illegal immigration and Leftist policies, but maintain that "California's going bankrupt sooner or later anyway," and have nothing to offer but mindless platitudes, fuzzy thinking, and the same old worn-oud Leftist drivel.
No wonder more and more Americans have nothing but scorn for the Left.
No wonder California's in such a mess.
Well I guess there may be a little something good, leaving last after all. The cruise ships are coming.
My inheritance from my late mother-in-law...a Nevada Highway Patrol Remington 870 Wingmaster Express. Still has a control number painted on the stock. Nothing scarier than the sound of a round being racked into place.
NO! That is OUTRAGIOUS!
"It boggles my mind that it would take more than 24 hours to clear out the superdome, when games can clear out in about an hour or so. "
Congradulations on stupidest post of the year.
Those people leaving the games are getting into their cars and driving home. These people have no cars and they have no homes. Where the hell are they supposed to go?
Idiot.
I've been looting Free republic of some really great ideas and philosophy...I guess I need to be shot too....:}
Please make the shot count...I don't want to suffer!
Poor choice of words in this racially charged context.
So wait... we're supposed to trust the government when it warns us to get out--warnings that could be provoked by fear of lawsuits or other aspects of the CYA mentality--but distrust it in everything else?
The folk who made the decision to stay behind to defend their property from any opportunistic looters also distrusted the government's competency.
thx!
Yep - I think they were bumped ahead to make up for the fact that the buses they paid for earlier were seized.
Probably the same ones justifying all the price gouging going on.
Tourism is the lifeblood of that city, for the most part, and the stories coming from the city are bad enough.
Adding the rape, beatings and murder of tourists to the already terrible list of atrocities would be a terrible blow to future efforts to resurrect the city as a reasonable place for tourists to visit.
