Superdome Evacuation Halted (rich people first..please.
Fox News ^

Posted on 09/03/2005 9:23:57 AM PDT by Dr. Marten

At one point Friday, the evacuation was interrupted briefly when school buses rolled up so some 700 guests and employees from the Hyatt Hotel could move to the head of the evacuation line — much to the amazement of those who had been crammed in the stinking Superdome since last Sunday.

"How does this work? They (are) clean, they are dry, they get out ahead of us?" exclaimed Howard Blue, 22, who tried to get in their line. The National Guard blocked him as other guardsmen helped the well-dressed guests with their luggage.

The 700 had been trapped in the hotel, next to the Superdome, but conditions were considerably cleaner, even without running water, than the unsanitary crush inside the dome. The Hyatt was severely damaged by the storm. Every pane of glass on the riverside wall was blown out.

Can anyone justify why the luxurious guests of the Hyatt were placed in line ahead of those that had been suffering in far worse conditions?

I don't think you can.

I think I can.

Like #6 said, there were reports that Nagin had to order the tourists to the front of the line because they were being threatened with murder by a mob at the Super Dome.

Now, in a situation like that, what would you rather have? A little "unfairness?" Or people murdered simply because they happened to have the wrong skin color, or social status, for the mob?

Of course it's tough for the people who got bumped from the head of the line. I'd resent it too, if I were bumped. But I doubt any of the bumpees were killed.

I just pray that the authorities can learn from this, and that it doesn't injure and destroy the fragile fabric of our nation to much more that it already has.

Oh, don't worry. The race-baiters and race-hustlers of the angry, impotent, hateful left will make sure that as much damage as possible is done to that fragile fabric. Dividing and demagogueing are the only way they know to try to win power.

If you read Dr. Martens' home page and posts he appears to be a socialist/Chicom apologist. Probably thinks with his third leg.

"The people in the dome are mad, and justifiably so. This whole evacuation has been a charlie fox from the beginning. I just pray that the authorities can learn from this, and that it doesn't injure and destroy the fragile fabric of our nation to much more that it already has."

It is we who must learn from this. We must learn to do our own thinking, to rely on ourselves, to prepare ourselves, to keep informed to make wise decisions about our well-being. If there's anything to be learned, it's that no one should depend on anyone else to do their thinking for them. These people had warning a devastating storm was coming -- not all of them were crippled and old and trapped unnecessarily. The government has never proven to me that I should rely on it before I rely on myself.

Howard Blue, 22

A 22-year-old man who defied the evacution order, and is now adding to the burden, competing with a sick or elderly person for rescue. Why the hell didn't he hike to higher ground when the hurricane was on its way? I am sick of able-bodied people who were too stubborn or stupid to get out when they could but are now whining that the government isn't helping them fast enough. Me Me me!

Look, we all need to understand that mayors of cities do not earn a lot of money. They have a lot of responsibility and are are always blamed when things go wrong. It must be oure hell to be a mayor. I'm sure Mayor Nagin is a fine man with good intentions. So, let's cut him some slack here. He needs the extra money that can be had by allowing those who can pay to go to the head of the line. Like a maitre'd in a fine restaurant who can get you a good table with a little cash.

He and I agree we are this far (holding two fingers an inch apart) from total anarchy in the United States.

I have friends in Texas, and they bought a gun also. There is a lot of fear running through the nation that the anarchy will spread.

I suggest a Remington 870. Cheap and very reliable BTW.

That was the mayor of N.O's idea.

Silly. EVERYTHING is Bush's fault, haven't you got the memo?

I agree! You are responsibly for your own and your family's safety. But there will always be those who can't or won't evacuate.

The man in the ICU can't prepare to evac. Neither can those in intuitions. N. Orleans being claimed by the sea has been warned about for decades. Not only wasn't there an evac plan, but there wasn't anyone who was the go to guy when the decisions needed to be made.

That is what needs to be learned.

I believe that you will find BBC links to stories about tourists being told - "When these buses leave, we will kill you!!" These people had sent text messages to someone - some how and followed up with calls home. A number of other people have similar stories from the convention center. Is was before Marriott got a couple buses in to get out their guests.

From what I understand, this was a group of tourist that had reservations on flights out that got cancelled. They later paid a large sum of money to have private buses come get them. The busses were conviscated by the National Guard to evacuate the Superdome people. How they got hold of anybody on the outside is beyond me. I heard this lady in the hotel on the phone being interviewed I think on CNN. She was telling the story a couple of days ago. She was worried about nobody realizing they were there. She said they were down to a cracker a day and a bit of water. When I read this, I assumed it was these people. Which included nearly 300 specialized doctors in emergency management.

Re Your#54.
My comments were not directed at you per se. I think we are in agreement about the evacuees.

Dr Marten is sitting in China and could very well end up in the same situation, a typhoon with flooding. You know he would be bitching to get out of china if a similar event happened.

I dont like his pot stirring post and race baiting comments, and my #6 was pulled which was directed at him for lack of thorough analysis.

I don't know the answers to this, but one thing I know is this: A category 4-5 hurricane was heading for New Orleans, and the entire Gulf coast for that matter. This hotel, and all of New Orleans should have started evacuations on Friday or sooner. As a resident of a coastal community, I can tell you this. When a hurricane heads our way, we make precautions. Mandatory evacuations in low lying areas happen early. We've not been hit in a long time, but I can tell you this. If I saw that monster heading my way, I would have found a way to get out in advance.

Mayor Nagin needs to have our understanding and compassion for his heroic act. A brave call to order a mandatory evacuation of a major city. So we should forgive him for forgetting to deploy the 300-400 schoolbuses that could have helped thousands of residents evacuate and probably save many lives. But let's remember that mayors are busy people with many things to do and people to see. The most important thing is that the mayor is in a safe place with an ample stash of food and water so that he can survive and man the command post.
