28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Tropical Storm 12
< The Red Cross is running spots on the news here... >
I won't donate a cent to Red Cross. My money has already gone to the Salvation Army.
> perhaps this storm will actually do them a favor .... the favor of getting them out of there and out where they can get a whole different view of the world.
I've always been amazed how God can bring blessing out of what would otherwise be situations of terrible trial and despair. I don't profess to begin to understand it.
I heard lib queen Andrea Mitchell say this morning on the Today Show that the Corp of Engineers funding for NO has been cut 'year after year after year' - so at least she made the point that it goes back a long time. But she also had to throw in something about a guy that was fired by this administration - maybe for backing it? Not sure.
Just now back online, can you paint me a quick broad overview?
We discussed the disease problem a few days ago. I don't think anyone's forgotten that is waiting in the wings, but right now it just isn't center stage.
Because Nagin is an idiot!!!
After we had our big earthquake in WA in 2001, I did research to find out where in the country was safe from earthquakes (I wanted to move). One place was FLORIDA, and I can't remember where the other one was, but it was about as appealing. No way am I leaving an earthquake risk for a hurricane risk. Unfortunately, there is pretty much no place safe from natural disasters. I am also stuck now because I am divorced and can't take my kids out of the state and away from their dad.
Amazing, isn't it? This is what the fall of Rome was like. And it's also horribly reminiscent of the death throes of Athens in Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War.
We're reaching a point in this country where something has got to give. Our politics are insane. Our culture is insane. Even our business climate is insane.
Heroes & villans....
I'd like 2 add two excellent Christian relief organizations to the list:
Southern Baptist's NAMB: http://www.namb.net/
Samaritan's Purse: http://www.samaritanspurse.org/
And for some reason the Indiana Jones theme keeps going through my head . . .
He said warehouse district....close to convention center and W Hotel.
Maybe in the end this will have a positive effect of the lives of the younger people who may receive opportunities they would never receive if they stayed and grew up in the ghetto's of New Orleans. Sometimes you get so ensconced that you can't see the forest for the trees in life.
As people pour forth to give aid and assistance over the coming months and Jessie Jackson, the Black Caucus, etc., lose direct control of them -- spread out across the country -- their perspective can't help but change.
I was thinking the same thing -- some of the more aware of the poor will take advantage of this, but obviously some will continue their "victim" status.
Did you hear the Congressional Black Caucus this morning? It was appalling.
"Terrorists have just put on their checklist: Look for levees to destroy.
And they already know how."
You guys need to think about how much explosive it would take to blow a levee - it is a whole lot. What takes out levees is huge water surges from storms, not tiny amount of explosives. Learn some physics man.
"despite the fact that city officials had been telling people for days to gather there"
Which people????
MAYOR--->GOVERNOR--->FEMA
If the first two elements of the chain are not transmitting the info, then how is FEMA to know what is going on.
GITMO sounds good to me. Let them experience paradise...
Some one had to take charge instead of blaming.
