Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Jesse Jackson has arrived in Louisiana...

These idiots are not helping the situation. They're almost gleeful in seeing this tragedy unfold. I'm in the MSM (and truly embarrassed about it), and I can tell you from experience, that they get more of a kick out of reporting this disaster than they do about actually helping people. It's shameful.

I have heard that from several lefty types on Air America in the last two days...

They truly feel that this will be the last week of President Bush's presidency...that when congress reconvenes next week, it will be to impeach Bush over this "fiasco in New Orleans"!!!

I have not heard one person ever mention that these people (except the patients and staff at hospitals, of course), were ORDERED to evacuate...there has not been one person that has spoken negatively of the Mayor of NO.

In fact, there was a congresscritter (didn't catch the name) who is a member of the Cong. Black Caucus on a little while ago...making excuses for the Mayor...because he is "only one man".

You dont have much knowledge of how a RR works? Do you think the RR would have left as many of their cars to get damaged if they had room and personnel elsewhere to move it somewhere?

I posted a thread on the La. board with pics of the UP yard in NO.

The Red Cross is running spots on the news here, saying their operators and phone systems is swamped, asking people not to call, just to send money to the address they provide.

I'd say relief collections are proceeding briskly.

I know, it's sickening beyond words, the leftist rats are a blight on this land, and all their media cohorts who aid them.

FNC reported that Huey's were taking gangsters out of the inner city. Normal arrest requirements have been suspended. I think they'll be treated like the terrorists - just put away for some period of time until things calm down.

NG: "We need assistance here. We have quite a bit of media here and they are causing quite a disturbance."

Why doesn't that surprise me?

Perhaps, maybe the authorities in Mississippi are brilliant as the authorities in NO are inept. I still think scale has a lot to do with it but the flooding is the primary difference. If NO hand't flooded the police, National Guard, and other officials could have gotten in there and clamped down on lawlessness right away. Not to mention they wouldn't be spending 90% of their resources and three days rescuing people from the roofs. As for the people themselves they would be standing around looking at their decimated homes trying to salvage what they could, like they are in Ms rather than being bussed out of state. People are coming BACK to Coastal Ms and can already start to cleanup. They're are just too many differences to compare NO to Coastal Ms at least in my mind.

BTW: My dad is from Canton, Ms, and is living there now along with my uncle who fled his home in NO.

All lies, there won't be anything happening to oust President Bush. Only in the wet dreams of craven liberals pushing their anarchy agenda. They can burn in hell.

So true, but I can't help myself and will try to watch it.

but the situation in NO cannot be compared to the situation in MS and AL.

No, you're right. It would have been a mess even with competent local government. But it's also where most of the cameras for that very reason. Even a plausible if mostly futile effort would look a lot better and might have done some good. My own impression (and it really is just an impression -- I don't know enough) is that the police who left likely did so mostly through demoralization, lack of leadership, lack of equipment and general hopelessness.
