Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Don't forget there are two buildings on fire where Harrigan is....no water to put the fires out..

AND, there supposedly is two major hotels really close to those fires...

Harrigan just keeps saying "I can't believe what I am seeing"...and this guy has spent time in the WORST war zones!!

He's probably struck by the resemblance. It's gotta be shocking to a guy who thought of America as the safest place in the world. He's probably been to NO many times, and had fun there. To see these jackals on the street is no doubt a very rude wake-up call.

True, but they got a handle on it quickly in Mississippi; much more quickly (IMHO) than the mere scale would suggest.

You and I seem to have grasped the concept (we aren't alone on FR, anyway) of the Principle of Subsidiarity.

The FIRST RESPONSE must come from the local Gummint--then the State--and finally, the Feds.

But unless the local and state folks have operable plans and some idea of what's going on, there's no way the Feds can be too helpful.

Harrigan has a death wish. He may acheive this soon.

On the hotels... which ones? I heard "warehouse" district but it's been so damned long since I've been there. Isn't that adjacent to the Quarter, along the river?

My email to CNN this morning:

We get it! CNN HATES George Bush. Certain Bill Schneider, Paula Zahn, Wolf Blitzer, and that arrogant jerk who does your financial shows who has been spouting off to Wolf all week.

George Bush didn't cause this hurricane, not did he create the gangs of hoodlums who have held New Orleans hostage since Monday evening.

These poor, uneducated people and these thugs were not created by George Bush. To the best of my knowledge Louisiana is and has forever been a Democratic State -- you know, one of YOUR states.

If anything this is an indictment of the Socialist System that you think SHOULD drive this nation; but if you want to blame someone, blame the real problem, the gangsta's, the rap generation.

These are people who will and have raped a four year old child. Not created by George Bush, created by 140+ years of people being forced to live in poverty and under the thumb of the democratic system and beaten down until they have no self-respect and think the world owes them a living.

no railroad president in his right mind would risk the legal ramifications of transporting humans in freight equipment

The government needs to step in and grant them immunity from any kind of lawsuit.

Correct. These people can go run and do nasty things to the looters and the National Guard can disclaim all responsibility....

I am in the weirdest state.

Seeing this hideous disaster and reading posts about the beginning attempted destruction of our president.

It is beyond sadness, this political hate fest, I don't have words for it. All while seeing what is happening in NO.

I thought things could not get worse in this country with the death fight of the politcal parties. But I think they will.

This is going to tear this country all to pieces. And a million or more people are homeless and destitute and wandering, most in a state of shock.

Connecticut - with the highest average household income - ranks 44th in percentage of income donated to charity

All the big-time CEO's simply have their shareholders make the donations through the Company rather than mak8ing personal contributions.

Besides, it's damned expensive to send all the children to Yale, Brown, and Hahvahd

Steve Harrigan is a Fox News reporter who grabbed his video phone and took off for one of the fires in downtown New Orleans (dunno his exact location, so the best directions I could give are relative to the screen).

The resupply convoy (cross-loaded onto military trucks because they're the only ones that can get through the floodwaters) now rolling into the Superdome and toward the Convention Center. The buses are back to the Superdome as well for another trip.

"I never saw a looter, even before the NG got there."

That is because your neighbors are civilized Americans and they live in a state with a proper government. Clearly, neither exists in large parts of New Orleans. The guy on Fox right now is explaining how order is being maintained in Biloxi. The police are actually running the show. What a concept. Now don't get me wrong, the police officers that are still on the job in New Orleans are heroes. But the officers and leaders that abandoned that city are criminal.

From the scanners: NG: Looters breaking into a Shell station. "Can you contact the proper authorities?". WTF? What are the ROE there? I guess they are still relying on NO PD for basic law enforcement? NG: "We need assistance here. We have quite a bit of media here and they are causing quite a disturbance."
