China is preparing for nuclear war with the United States over Taiwan, and a conflict is likely in the near future because of divisions among Beijing's leaders, a Chinese democracy activist says.
Wei Jingsheng, a leading international advocate for political reform in China, said in an interview with The Washington Times that President Bush and other U.S. leaders do not fully understand the chance of a conflict breaking out and must do more to avert it.

Actually, Wei Jingsheng is someone that I admire very much. He was imprisoned for many years for speaking out against his country. My question is, why do we have to get into a war with China? Let them have Taiwan. At this point, with war after war, we don't need to get into yet another war, and especially not one with China - which would be nuclear. What is Taiwan to us, that we would feel the need to defend it? [Probably not Wei Jingsheng's sentiment, but mine.] I just don't want to get into a nuclear war with China.
"Not 'The Craw!' THE CRAW!!!!"
Ping to you sir in regards to your ping list.
If you watch the BBC World feed or the CNN world feed, you would think that all of America is on the verge of collapse and/or popular revolt. Al-Djezeera (I speak Arabic) has been merciless and has again failed to understand Americans, American thinking and the American love of "HOME". It is a misreading of appearances that has lead to actions by our enemies both abroad and dwelling within our borders in the past and I fear is taking place right now.
As Cindy noted, being on our knees in prayer is the right thing to do.
This would be a really poor choice of timing for China to even think of taking on the US. There are a bunch of annoyed citizens that aren't ready to take any lip from foreign powers just now.
Oh, really? Read Harry Wu right to the end.
I will take Harry Wu, and Wengshei's opinion over YOURS anyday. And isn't it interesting how you start venting about expropriating FReepers' firearms....because in your fermenting brain rot...you opine they are somehow a public danger.... h'mmmm. Seems to me you have come out of the closet as the gun-grabbing liberal you have always been.
You know who Harry Wu is, I would read his article, here. Note the end of the article,
"Wu added, "When Clinton came back from China in 1998, he was like Chamberlain returning from Munich before World War II. Clinton said, `We reached an agreement with China not to target each other's cities with ICBMs.' I say, do we need such an agreement with India or the UK? China doesn't want America to have a missile defense because it would make their offensive system lousy. They don't want America to share the system with Taiwan."
Asked if China would ever launch nuclear weapons at the U.S. mainland, Wu responded, "They are crazy. They will do it."
Current number of strategic nuclear weapons:
China: 20
USA: 7200
result: no more China. 2 or 3 less US cities. do you live in one?
I was referring to your idea of leaving thousands of nuclear weapons lying around commercial ports outside China, where they could (and would) be stolen by longshoremen. Maybe you leave your own weapons lying where strangers can easily steal them, but that puts you in a very small minority.
"result: no more China. 2 or 3 less US cities. do you live in one?"
I don't.
They nuke Los Angeles and San Francisco...California never votes Democrat again.
What's the catch?
Actually I would rather have Taiwan. All the best PC Motherboards come out of Taiwan.
We've already lost a substantial part of LA, and L.A. would not be considered a loss to a lot of us...
< /sarcasm >
Neither Russia nor China can afford to be that suicidal, can they?
Bush should publicly call for free, democratic, multi-party elections in China.
"result: no more China. 2 or 3 less US cities. do you live in one?"
I don't.
They nuke Los Angeles and San Francisco...California never votes Democrat again.
What's the catch?

or maybe they can hit Boston so someone else can win the Superbowl sometime
If the Ming-Monsters attack Taiwan and we stop them and then they nuke the US, those big caves under China won't protect them for long....whatever parts of China aren't cooked initially would be re-fried later and again until no more CAVEMEN existed....I figure MOST of the Chinese Military knows there is NO survival for them if they nuke us....
Appeasement, eh? That really worked well for Neville Chamberlain, didn't it?
And as for "what is Taiwan to us"...how can you ask that with a straight face? You do know the people of Taiwan are free, democratic, autonomous and have been an reliable ally of the U.S.?
And then there is the strategic impact of just handing them Taiwan on a silver platter, besides all of our remaining allies quailing in terror over such an incredible cave-in when our mettle is tested...there would be the new dynamic of a China controlling all of the South China seas...read Steve Mosher's book:
Isn't that the truth! Can you imagine that kind of destruction happening in several places around this country at once? This disaster has been truly very revealing.
And just what makes you think they would be so stupid as to do it that way? They will only need deploy them when the operation is underway. Those COSCO ships are run by the PLAN. They have things pretty tight. Only the Westerners typically get looted. We are "the great enemy". The Chinese MILITARY assets would never be touched by their highly nationalistic and heavily indoctrinated people. And furthermore, the weapons would need operators. Those detachments would have their own guards. That is indeed something to watch out for. So are you? Somehow I doubt it.
"No. They would wait for a Democrat in the White House"
Looks like they won't have long to wait!
"And just what makes you think they would be so stupid as to do it that way?"
Because that's what you said they'd do.
Pretty tough talk there...I am assuming you are an Armchair General? In case you failed to miss the point, my scenario (based on the drip, drip, drip of news stories that relate to this) is that China and Russia join forces against the U.S. to take Taiwan. They've been a little too chummy for my taste lately and China has been flat out arrogant in their sabre rattling in the last few years.
