President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Beats me -- have no idea how long it will take to drain the city. Last night they had an "expert" on levees on and he said they would take out the levees protecting the city to drain it quicker. If they start draining the city won't more water come in? As you can tell I have absolutely zero knowledge about levees.

The Coast Guard had rescued 1,250 folks as of this morning.

Maybe in all of this...the nation will have a new found respect for our military. Cindy truly has been kicked by Katrina.

"You are dealing with a population that is used to having EVERYTHING handed to them, from food, to money, to drugs."

Sigh. I agree completely. I am temporarily living in Memphis and the culture that pervades this city completely explains the actions of people in New Orleans who would rather loot stereo systems than seek shelter.

Im sorry to admit it but I had CNN on and Brown was talking to a Jefferson Parish official who was talking about 100,000 people still stranded in that parish alone. There are only a total of 3000 Parish employees.

Actually, it's not. They have to leave Virginia, go AROUND Florida and into the Gulf. Also, some of those ships were at Japan, and the others took almost a week to arrive.

I've heard several people say that about her, about her inability to be a leader in this tragedy.

I haven't heard any praise for her leadership. She's deadweight.

I saw a picture somewhere (Biloxi or Gulfport area, not sure which) of a burial vault that had the front sheared clean off and the caskets spilled out and dumped all around in front. That's probably what happened, the storm surge broke open aboveground vaults and floated the contents out. As if there werne't enough horrors there, eh?

current patients are being evac, staged, and triaged at the New Orleans airport.

That is excellent news! Likewise the expect patients alert to Tampa.

Is MSY open to relief flight ops?

I don't know the local topography/hydrology/watershed dynamics well enough to give you a good answer- but another poster earlier on this thread said that s/he has heard that the Army Corps of Engineers reports that the levee breaches have been closed and that the pumping has begun.

If true, that's very good news. Much easier to close without a huge flow going through the breach.

"HF nets to fall back on. But they are expensive"

Not really... A handheld HF transmitter can be purchased for around $200.00. Look at the Yaesu VX-7R.

They really need to bring in pumps. I think that is the only way to get the water out. Now, what will be left after they do that.... (turning green).

How is this possible? I thought over 80% of the city was evac?

More lies I imagine. The death toll in MS/AL is what > 3,000? NO and rest of LA will make it much much higher I fear.

Jefferson Parish official Deano Bonnano on CNN with Aaron Brown. Bonnano blamed the lawlessness on the lack of National Guard troops to protect the citizens on the deployment of the NG to Iraq. Of course, scumbag Aaron Brown lapped it up.

Apparently, neither Bonnano nor Brown realize that the Louisiana National Guard operates under the command of Governor Blanco. There were NG troops in the Superdome, put there to supervise the people who couldn't leave on Sunday, due to the incompetence of both Blanco and Nagin.

I've been trying to learn about their levee system here:

http://www.nola.com/hurricane/images/goingunder_jpg.jpg

It's a HUGE pic and it gives you the option to zoom in but you can't look at it all at the same time, so it's difficult to read.

Earlier I had been trying on the US Army Corps of Engineers websites but they've been down since the beginning of this. It has just come back online, but I haven't combed through all of it yet to see how much info they have:

Aaron Brown asking anybody on camera "Did you underestimate this storm? What took so long? Who's to blame."

Sickening.
