President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

The word is that in Jefferson Parish and Orleans, FEMA has "bugged out." They haven't brought supplies in.

THE REAL MILITARY IS NOW FLOWING IN. National Guard is being replaced before our eyes. Watch the feed.

Word is that the Marines are at 1515 Poydras where our OC4s are. I think we're coming back online in force shortly.

On another note: I've just been told that we're being monitored in Iraq! To all the troops there, from one soldier to another, we're hanging tough here and you hang tough too. No matter what you're hearing, we love you guys and want you to know that we know how hard you've got it. Stay strong!

Peach - if you are referring to active duty, I believe - though I don't know - that this is the case. I do not believe it is the case with NG units, and I think they could put all the NG they can find in to help with law enforcement.

Even with regard to active duty military, I think they can do everything except actual law enforcement. And could probably even do force protection while they were involved in other activities - whether they be logistical, SAR, or whatever.

The problem with martial law - and there are problems with it - is that this then becomes a Federal problem, all the way around. I don't think they could workably delegate LE to the US military while retaining other functions on a state or local level. I don't think LA or NO want that, and I don't think Washington wants that.

"Can any LA folks confirm my impression that gov Blanco would be better suited to be a WalMart greeter than a state governor? The woman is totally out of her league. Who was her Republican opponent and how could he/she ever lose to this empty suit?"

Her opponent was an incredibly smart Republican called Bobby Jindal, who was a top executive in the HHS for President's Bush's first term. He was very popular and almost won the governorship, but lost because a) he is East Indian in origin b) (some say) he didn't respond quickly enough to Blanco's attacks on him during the campaign. He was very impressive, however, and was quickly put in a 'safe' district where he was handily elected to Congress as the LA Representative. I wonder if many in Louisiana now regret the day when Kathleen Blanco won the governorship over Bobby Jindal.

Wasn't that surreal? The whole thing is amazing. They are talking about postal services and welfare checks and people are going without food and water.

Yesterday morning I went to a gas station at 4:30 am. I waited in line until 7:45 when the station ran out of gas. I went to work. When I left work, I went to another gas station and waited on line for over 2 hours. Before I got to turn in to the station, they ran out of gas. The few gas stations here that have gas are being guarded by police and there is at least a 3-hour wait. If you don't have enough gas to wait, you are out of luck. They will not allow you to fill a gas can. People are getting into knife, fist, and gun fights in these gas lines. The nearest gas station is about 7 miles from my house but the pumps aren't working because there is no power. I guess it's pretty easy to criticize people when you are not affected personally.

From this article:

Offers have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States, the spokesman said. Still, Bush told ABC-TV: "I'm not expecting much from foreign nations because we hadn't asked for it. I do expect a lot of sympathy and perhaps some will send cash dollars. But this country's going to rise up and take care of it.''

Frickin' MSM (ABC) at top of hour. Reporting that people are asking for water, food, assistance and that NO Charity Hospital staff requesting evacuation. Casually says that help has been delayed due to "gunfire". Nothing else said. GRRRR.

Druggies, their despirate.

Maybe. But a lot of the rumors have gotten out of control.

Did it occur to any of you that sensational reports of well organized AK-47 toting gang-bangers patrolling the streets do more to keep police and rescue workers out of the area while you loot unfettered than anything else?

I would suspect there are quite a few strung out drug addicts that have been cut off from their suppliers.

FEMA has known for a long time that a direct hit on NO would cause these problems, but they are addressing the situation as if it is a complete surprise.

The only excuse for FEMA (the "E" stands for Emergency and the "M" stands for Management) is to quickly provide services beyond the capacity of affected areas.

For example, it has been clear since Monday night that 500 000 housing units for six-twelve months are required. This "city" will require water, food, hospitals, clinics, police, and fire protection.

Where is it going to be constructed, by whom, and for how much?

FEMA's job is not happyface press conferences to talk about federal-state or federal-local partnerships.

If FEMA is not creating the resources necessary for this massive humanitarian and refugee crisis, FEMA should be dissolved.

It took them FOUR whole days to figure out that they could use school busses for evacuation!

Something to see, isn't it?

I went to a grocery store on Tuesday afternoon -- sorry I wasted my gas doing so. We were without power & I was trying to find some ice and non-perishable food. There wasn't a crust of bread, a cookie, a cracker, an apple, or anything else left in that store. I walked to a convenience store last night to try to get some milk & bread, but they still didn't have power and were not open.
