President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Can you not go out and FIND some gas?

That's what the rest of us are doing.

that said, i'm not sure who could handle this well, i think we just got spoiled with guys like Rudy, and only now realize how good he was at his job.

Ah, not a hospital but a hospice specialty center.

26 bed-ridden patients and 40 staff members have to evacuate from the building. They need assistance moving these patients down several flights of stairs because the elevator is broken. Anyone who can help is asked to come to 3700 St. Charles Avenue immediately.

The generator powering the building is on the verge of running out of fuel.

Nunemaker said it was raining outside and there were some strong winds.

Catherine Sweisgood, a co-worker, said they need to get the people out of there before dark. The patients need to be brought to Touro so they can be airlifted out of harms way.

Grocery stores around the company should be seeing a run soon when people start to panic about food getting to their local store.

drugs? food? water?

You'll find more of that at the local pharmacy then at hospital. Look they said they have sent SWAT teams two or three times and it turned out to be a bunch of bs. And asked the media to report it to them before reporting it on TV.

Gee I am going break into Circuit City. Hmmm.. I think I will call the local TV morons and report that a group of gang bangers armed with AK-47's have taken over the local hospital. That outta keep the dumbass cops busy.

Bush IS saying...everyone remember---that people should cut down on their use of gas

While I realize the democrats are completely incompetent and care only about bringing down Bush he is not a GREAT LEADER

Nothing to secure our borders and PLEASE point me to any speech he or any GOP leader has made WARNING that our Refining Capacity is barely adequate and needs to be expanded since NO NEW refineries have been built in decades because of the Environmental Wackos while the demand for gas has gone up

Labor Day weekend and last big vacation time for the summer. Economic impact on tourism $$$ will be horrendous

FEMA gets Hurricane Katrina help from unlikely place [FCW.com, 08/29/05]
BY Bob Brewin
Published on Aug. 31, 2005

Operation of the New Orleans police radio system in the wake of Hurricane Katrina has been plagued not only by floodwaters but by a lack of natural gas to power generators.

Not only that, Louisiana State Police turned away repair technicians when they attempted to reach the city, according to an on-scene report the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials International relayed to Federal Computer Week.

The report, contained in an e-mail Wednesday from Dominic Tusa, a communications consultant in Covington, La., to Willis Carter, chief of communications for the Shreveport, La. fire department said the New Orleans Police Department’s dispatch center on the second floor of police headquarters was flooded. The police were forced to relocate to the nearby Hilton Hotel.

Tusa said the police department’s citywide 800 MHz radio system functioned well during and immediately after the hurricane hit New Orleans, but since then natural gas service to the prime downtown transmitter site was disrupted and the generator was out. Transmitter sites for the police radio system “are also underwater with the rising water and [are] now disabled,” Tusa said.

Owners of the sites that housed police radio transmitters would not allow installation of liquefied petroleum gas tanks as a backup to piped gas, meaning generators did not have any fuel when the main lines were cut, Tusa said.

Radio repair technicians attempting to enter the city were turned away by the state police, even though they had letters from the city police authorizing their access, Tusa said.

In contrast to the problems in New Orleans, Tusa said the Harrison County, Miss., Department of Public Safety’s radio system, which serves Gulfport and Biloxi, remained fully operational throughout the storm and continued to operate afterward. He added that the system has experienced generator problems, “but those are being resolved as they crop up. “

too many people reading free republic "scanner" reports.

The scanner requests were coming from people watching news accounts. That's how the rumors got here. It's being reported in the media. The media puts out the rumor, people call Washington/BR asking for action, the CO gets a call from some elected yahoo and he sends people out, we hear the scanner report and repeat it.
