President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Lot of good ideas on FR
It was probably being done two days ago. You just don't snap your fingers and magically make all the military people appear somewhere. Plans have to be made where to deploy them. This involves assesing where they will most be needed which first includes a damage assesment. Transportation has to be arranged, supplies have to be procured, etc. etc. etc. Don't fall for the MSM spin on this.
Dunno if that's exactly standing.
Portions of Highway 90 lie crumbled.
its not "Gorelick legalism", its a basic principle of our democracy regarding the use of the military to gun down american citizens in an american city.
Arkansas is taking some.....
That could be a real concern. Imagine TV images of mostly white troops shooting black gangbangers being beemed all over the nation. Could we see a replay (or worse) of the Rodney King verdit riots in cities nationwide?
"To: mwl1
why is everything up to the federal government? why are all the local police, the state police and the national guard under control of the governor - simply given a pass as to standing up to their responsibilities?
its obvious now what is going on, the police and the state controlled guard could be shooting these people by the truckload right now, and they aren't."
It's a game of chicken.
Whoever gives the order to shoot to kill will wear the albatross....ALL of it, Gulf Coast, NO, gas crunch, death toll, evac, all of it.
Bush legally can't give the order. National Guards under Bush are "military". National Guards under the Governor are "State Militia". The military can't run LE ops on US soil.
Sounds like the other way around, like Defender 5 is trying to raise San Antonio and can't.
Kenneth Brinson serves food organized by the East Main Missionary Baptist Church to help residents.
Several are already there or are planning on heading that way soon....Indiana has sent Guard and utility workers, red cross units etc...and I'm sure others are doing similar.
I don't know, but they better get a handle on this fast. People are telling me they will not bring supplies now and not all the evacuees are criminals, so the good will suffer because of the bad.
Beth Stump, right, works to comfort her two daughters, Breanna, 9-weeks-old, and Bonnie, 2, as the three waited to get food from the Salvation Army in east Biloxi. The family home was washed off its foundation and into the street.
I agree with you.
The next question will be, "Why didn't the military get moved into place when Katrina was a mere tropical depression?" Some people just kill me.
I can't bear to look at those pictures. There are cars in the wreckage of the bridge. How horrible :(
Nonsense, and you'll be proven wrong in the next several days.
Yeah, probably more like it - remember I'm on 2 hours of sleep . . .
I didn't say it has "no merit," I said that you and I don't have enough information to determine whether or not there's any merit to the idea. We don't know, for example, whether the shooters are concentrated enough, or obvious enough, or numerous enough, to be amenable to a "shoot them by the truckload" solution.
The media reports about shots fired are probably true -- but we (you, I, and anybody else on this thread) lack enough information to get any sense of the scale of the problem, or the area over which it's spread.
