President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

"And on the world, or at least the U.S.'s biggest trading partner.

*cough cough* ;)

It's just starting to sink in.

Yes, if the food distribution situation in the southern ports has caused no exports to foreign countries there could be some severe shortages around the world.

Wow! I am so sorry to hear of such a loss. Words cannot make much difference but we all are here as a family. What more can be said?

Great post. Was pinged to that info this afternoon, and immediately forwarded it to friends who are hoping to find out whether their home is still standing in Biloxi.

Shep has been fantastic. I have a new respect for him. If there is any justice he will win an award for his coverage.

There was a discussion somewhere on the earlier thread about how they were whining about funding for upgrades to pumps, levee's, etc. being cut following 9/11. Didn't take a rocket scientist to see that would lead right to Bush bashing.

Of course, if the Clinton toons hadn't turned their heads to Osama and friends in the 90's, maybe we wouldn't had 9/11 and their would have been money for fixing/upgrading the systems.

Finally, I think the entire system was designed to hold a Cat 3 storm not a near direct hit from a Cat 4. Blame NO's location being below sea level for most of the problem. It was inevitable that someday a nasty hurricane would take it out.

Yet, how come Shep or one of his crew could not write out a handwritten sign and post it on the road down there giving information?

he tried to get the info from police but they dont know absolutely no coordination..areas to go to to be evacuated should be broadcast on radio & tv as wll as havinb police etc notified. each hospital should be contacted every few hours for an update as to their conditions and needs..Rescue, Damage Control, Evacuation simple things are not being done. Where is the Chief of Police? He should be on TV threatening looters and robbers. Is there any leadership in NO?

suggest you try to find an 80s Statler Brothers version. It's the most beautiful version I've ever heard.

I will try to find it. Thank you.

Don-O - go police the thread that talks about the BLACK man who wrote what a disgrace it was that BLACKS were the predominant race that were doing the looting.

CBS:

Woman interviewed with her husband's dead body next to her.

She and many others are stranded on the interstate since officials can't evacuate them.

She tried to flag down police as her husband was dying yesterday, but they ignored her completely.

I agree with you. No more money to the Red Cross.

Catholic Charities and Salvation Army are much more efficient in getting aid to the needy.

Anderson Cooper just did an astonishing piece on the smell of death in a couple of the towns on the coast...going into houses that have been locked up for 3 days with people dead inside...

They're going house to house...in a recovery effort.

Beyond grim.

Is that beer lessing filling or better tasting? Or should somebody shoot that guy?

Essential supplies there. The authorities should help him drink it then shoot him.

A military helicopter lands to offload evacuees near a strip of Interstate-10 in Metarie, Louisiana, Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005. Thousands of people were evacuated to the Interstate and then put on buses for undetermined destinations.
