President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Thugs and looters who commandeered a bus?
Whoah! Is the entire lawless street of New Orleans hijacking school buses and heading to Houston? This is surreal.
Would you "take" a gun to protect your family?
Texas now has another border to worry about. This is bad, real bad. A walking crime wave is about to hit the rest of this country.
Gee whiz now that we made it to Texas. Where do we sign up for benefits?
I wouldn't take a gun if I lived in NO -- I would already have one. Think most of the people that took the guns were up to no good from the sound of it.
Well, they may be both!
Shep was very clear that there were no resources available for the people on the bridge in the immediate area. Was he lying and there was really a Salvation Army station in walking distance? Why would he lie about that?
I heard that the "moat" around the Super Dome was 5 feet deep. Are you aware of spots which would be easy to cross? How are you aware of this and Shep, standing there, is not?
I share some of your frustration with people who weren't smart enough to leave when they could, and with the general management of the situation thus far, but I can't understand your criticisms of Shep Smith or the people on the bridge. It seems to me that if those people, having walked so far, could have gotten into the Dome, they would have. I've seen a lot of stupid things done by people in NOLA today, but I can't fault this.
I thought the same thing.
My God. Some people are just sick. Here I am suckered in by this guy, and he probably took this thing at gun point and got stoned on the way. Well, it did appear there were children in tow as well, so hopefully they can be saved.
You're welcome, Diva. Keep the faith now. :)
Shots fired at "Children's Hospital" - report just on scanner, sending units . . .
"This problem -- refugees showing up at the Astrodome under their own power -- should have been anticipated and addressed the minute the Astrodome was named as the next staging center."
Well, we are in friendly disagreement here.
I mean, the people in Houston have gone out of their way to offer hospitality. They and the Red Cross have had their hands full with details on how to accommodate a Dome full of angry, anxious people. If they didn't anticipate some extras, can we fault them? These folks are trying hard. Let's give them a break. And there ARE other shelters open in Houston.
And NOW they have to deal with a renegade bus with a bunch of hooligans claiming to be from the SuperDome. What is next???!!
This is just pathetic! CNN was interviewing the sob sister from the bus about her not knowing where her mom and child were....then the reporter said, well, someone had rented her a motel room for the night. Odd. The reporter is now saying that some people got off the bus and took off. Damn....who are these people? Prisoners? Looters? SCUM
It's not like they parked under the Galleria with nefarious schemes...?
If the bus has LA plates, they should be considered seeking asylum/refuge, even if they can't be accomodated at the 'dome.
Yep, and I bet his head hurt because he's in bad need of a fix... probably figured he had to get out of NO to find one.
There will be usable showers now....water to drink...out of the faucets....toilets that work....airconditioning....lights....maybe even cots WITH pillows and blankets.
All of them have obviously conspired to commit vehicle theft and have crossed state lines. They are guilty of a crime and should be prosecuted. Texas was the wrong place for such criminals to go.
