President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Thanks for that info. Why do they consider NO like a bowl below sea level? I get the feeling we are not being told the truth sometimes.
Nobody likes to hear Aaron talk more than Aaron does.
There has been little news about all the tourists stranded in NOLA. Still haven't forgotten the story Saturday about a foreign tourist who approached a news camera crew setting up for the storm coverage. They were oblivious to the hurricane, asking if the crew was in town filming a movie.
I can tell you this.
My brother-in-law was a tugboat captain on the Intercaostal waterway there for a decade or two.
Back in the 1980s he, my sister and their kids moved to Decature Alabama and he is in charge of running most of the barges and tugs down the Tennessee River now.
They were planning on coming here this Labor Day weekend, and I just got off the phone with her.
My brother-in-law's company was just bought out a little while ago by a big company (can't remember the name of it), but she said his company lost several barges and tugs at the mouth of the Mississippi, some offshore at New Orleans, etc.
They also own a few of the gas pipelines there, which my Sis said they were talking about on TV earlier, and can't get to. Also a lot of trucking interests, etc.
She said they were sending diving scavenger teams there as we speak to retrieve the lost stuff. I really, despite her hoping, think they won't make it here. And they wanted to come because they are worried about my Mom, who I had to take to the Emergency Room this week with a minor stroke (working up to a bigger one).
I don't know if I'd trust train rails in Louisiana in this situation. They would probably wash out too.
I think they need a massive effort with helicopters (landing on roofs), and the right kind of boats to get things in check.
I am not an expert, but I did live in Louisiana (Lake Charles area) for years. And I can tell you that place was a cesspool before this hurricane, and all the looting and stuff doesn't surprise me.
I also know there are a lot of sportsmen there with guns and an attitude.
I'm glad I am not there and God help these people.
I fear it will get a whole lot worse.
Okay. I was just wondering if people had the opportunity to get on buses before the storm and whether or not they were taking people to the Dome or out of town. I'm confused about that per the discussion above (your fault Howlin...:-) I DO understand that they are taking them out by bus now.

You've missed the whole exchange, lots of folks on here are saying Shep was grandstanding trying to make a story. Then some were saying it was obvious where they should go and Shep was making a story out of it. The Point is SHep asked those in charge and didn't get an I don't know or a I'll try to find out. He got NOTHING.
At the time he was asking there were several people near him that where in medical distress One child was in the first stages of Dehydration and suffering from apparent fevor sickness. There was obvious need there, all these officials had to do was say I don't know but I will get the info to someone who does and try and get you help.
Instead he got stonewalled and incoherant blather.
What purpose did that serve by those in charge? I think these idjits where promoted above their abilities.
A military cargo plane could evacuate about 250 people at a time. As soon as the winds get to near gale force, it will be too dangerous for them to take off, and none could land.
Planes are not good options for evacuations of thousands of people ... In fact, there aren't many good options at all with the exception, possibly, of trains.

Joe from Accuweather showed the warm "puff" of air that moved it to the East away from New Orleans at the last minute and then it curved back to the West and continued on the previously forecasted track. It basically moved 15 miles to the East from that puff.
Yes, I would get on a bus. I think many people thought the storm would "turn". They weren't educated to the seveirty of the situation. Many probably only heard little snippets about the storm from a friend, maybe a little news report. It isn't like all these poor people were fastidioulsy tracking this storm and paying attention to all the news reports beforehand. It ain't excuses. I am saying NO had NO plan and I want to know WHY there was NO plan as it was a KNOWN problem and we gave them millions in disaster preparation funds. If you don't ahve a evac for CAT5 hurricane plane, where is your evac for dirty nuke plan? Execute that one...

Thank you for sharing that letter from Bill Martin. It is breathtaking...it gives some idea of the scope of the disaster. People coming in on buses and literally dying before his eyes! Sending out for more body bags.
