President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

If you don't have a TV or radio, how can you find out there is a bus?

Very, very few people in 2005 America don't have TV or a radio, or access to a relative's or friend's or employer's TV or radio. Sorry. I don't buy the "too poor" excuse. There are many litigimate reasons why a minority of people could not leave on their own -- disability, advanced age, illness, late-stage pregnancy, etc. But with adequate advance planning, coordination and training by city, county (parrish) and state officials, any number of alternative modes of transportation could have been mobilized to evacuate such folks.

Hubby and I were talking about the kids who need to get to school. I guess yours will be busting at the seams with all the extra students.

A mess. Thanks for sharing what it's like. My heart goes out to you.

Corrupt cities get corrupt mayors and die from it. Mayor Nagin can declare martial law (aka suspend habeus corpus) and ask for federal military assistance too, but only for New Orleans. Governor Blanco can do so for New Orleans and all the other flooded areas, even when their mayors won't.

But neither will act.

My point about Blanco is, however, that she will be blamed for acting like a weak woman because she is female, even though Nagin has done exactly the same thing. Nagin hasn't cried on camera. Blanco did, so IMO future female gubernatorial candidates just took a hit.

Tough. These two have the duties, and won't do them.

I am not making excuses. I would not go to Superdome when a CAT5 with 225MPH gusts was bearing down on me. I want OUT of the city. And that is what was headed for the city. and mayor Nagin knew that. Gov Blanco knew it. President Bush knew it.

pres Bush had to call Blanco and Nagin to evac NO, and what good did that do? The smart people left already. The poor people were left at the mercy of their city.

Did any one else see the CNN reporter in downtown NOLA with neon lights blinking in the background? What's up with that if there is no electricity?

The refugees won't be going home any time soon.

They are coming to the Astrodome and Dallas' Reunion Arena on a one way ticket. There is no plan for returning them.

Who is "they"?

If you meant who would not want to leave yet, I meant some of the looters.

Saint Bernard usually only floods on the lower end, and they have been able to help each other in the past. They are begging for help.

Heard (from somewhere deep in the bowels of the Katrina threads) that the storm took an unpredicted turn.

And that was completely, utterly wrong.

The NHC forecast landfall point (directly over New Orleans or a couple miles E of New Orleans) was essentially unchanged from 11PM Saturday night, through TEN more NHC forecast tracks, through landfall on Monday.

The storm ended up basically following this forecast track precisely.

The NWS was forcasting massive storm surges throughout Mississippi all day Saturday and all day Sunday. Mississippi was put under the same Hurricane Watches and Warnings as Louisiana.

Right. Instead of New Orleans, she came ashore at Barcas.

Well.. if I was Governor I wouldn't be crying, I'd be working to hard to spend so many hours a day before a camera like Blanco and Landrieu. You may get a phone call to Haley Barbor, but he's not spending an hour on Larry King... he's working!

Great analogy, they have lost thier ability to act and think on their own. Talk about dehumanizing an entire group of people, breaks my heart.
