Breaking: Atlanta-area Gas Panic

WSB, via Hannity, reporting that a urban legend is going around about gas shortages, causing a panic in people, who are rushing to gas stations. Reporter said regular gas prices at one station was above $4.

I really don't know where they are going to go. I just don't. As someone pointed out on another thread, many of them have absolutely nothing to go back to, assuming they were even allowed to go back to New Orleans. No possessions. No job. Not even a neighborhood. If the government sends them to another city, they might just end up staying there.

But no, most won't be buying houses in overpriced markets. They will, however, soak up some of the rental market, raising rents, and fueling interest in investment properties.

The media is driving the price up with their shortage panic scenario!

Exactly. The AJC put out the story earlier about the pipelines, but failed to mention that we get a lot of our gas from the coastal ports. And failed to mention that they expected the pipelines to be functional again over the weekend. There wasn't a shortage, until the news suggested there might be. From there everyone rushed out (I was considering it, but decided against), and now we do have a shortage. And its spreading nationwide.

I would LOVE it if every road had a bike lane and many people took advantage of it.

On the news they are saying that some reported the gas prices going up as they were pumping it. One person would pay one price and the next was charged a higher price.

That happened at a Chevron where I was filling up my pickup this afternoon. When I passed the station 1/2 hour earlier the price was $2.799, when I came back to buy gas it was 2.899, and while I was pumping it went to 2.999. Cars which pulled in as I was pumping were paying the higher price, but my pump remained at 2.899 until I finished.

That was mid-afternoon, I don't know what the price may be by now. It was 2.589 yesterday with normal amount of cars at the stations. People have gone crazy around here today since the rumors started about gas rationing, I haven't seen anything like this since the '73 oil embargo.

Saw on TV a shot of the station charging almost $6 a gallon. It was a BP station. All I could think of was their smarmy, faux-environmentalist commercials that appeals to liberals.

Been out already - $2.89 for mid-grade (the station was out of regular), and it cost me 50 bucks to fill up my urban assault vehicle. Rachel filled her car up this morning (though it took 40 bucks to fill her Saab up)...

I live just north of Atlanta in one of the most populated areas.

There is NO PANIC here,

only about 10 cars at each pump. Sorry, but I dont consider that panic. I remember JIMMY CARTERS gas shortage when there would be 50 cars in line. Now, have gas stations raised their prices? Yes by about $0.40. Driving home at 5:30pm I saw prices ranging from $2.77 to $3.19. Yesterday they were around $2.65. The Atlanta area has 10 days worth of reserves and generators are being taken down to LA. to pump the fuel up this way. Fuel restrictions on sulfer have been scrapped until September 9th allowing fuel from other areas to with abundant supply to sell here and truck drivers have been given the ok to drive longer hours to bring fuel in to the area sooner.

Things will be just fine. Some people here have never experienced any real adversity in their lives and over react and over characterize whats happening.

There's no panic just calm prudent behavior taking place. I for one will sleep easy tonight. You should too.

And I thought it was just the Philly area doing milk, bread and snow shovel panics for snowstorms. I guess Atlanta wanted a panic of its own.

Oh, and in case the banks fail, we're only taking precious metals and gems to pay for the fuel.

I'm very interested in seeing how insurance companies put an actual price value on what they've lost.

And if these neighborhoods are gone... where do insurance companies mail payment?

The bureaucratic armageddon has only just begun.

Sounds just like 9/11/01, when rumors said gas tankers were ordered off the roads. Retailers jacked up their prices.

Of course, back then, "gouging" meant $1.89/gallon.

You'd be surprised (or maybe you wouldn't, LOL) how many fairly intelligent people are running around right now planning to pay that $10,000 difference for the hybrid -- to save $400 per year in gasoline.

Gas is $2.69 at a Shell station on Ga. 141 in Norcross. Small lines. It is $2.79 at a BP in North Springs.

Some BP Station in Stockbridge, just outside of ATL, is charging $5.87/gal.

One BP station here (Metro Atlanta) is charging over $5.00 for regular and $6.00 for Premium.
