I disagree. This was not intended to be an "I feel your pain speech". We've seen many such speeches from local officials over the last few days and much is still left undone and critical needs go unmet. I think this was offered as a public look into some of what has been going on behind the scenes and showed engagement and commitment on the part of the federal government. The President presented a basic plan of action which is already well underway. He made it clear this was going to be a long process and we will no doubt hear more from him as the arduous process of working through this disaster continues.

With all due respect to you and (my personal hero) Ronald Reagan, we don't know HOW Reagan would have reacted to this. No president has ever faced this kind of catastrophe.

My hope is Reagan, too, would have known the best "comfort" right now is a strong plan of action.

Would be great to get the refinery in Meridian restarted and to have our refineries updated and new ones built without the EPA having such tough rules in place.

What a day! I have been in town at the marina NEXT TO OUR DOCK where our boat is kept that caught on fire today (Gig Harbor, WA) and about 50 boats burned and it was huge!

So when the rebuilding takes place will it be in the same floodable areas or safer locales on higher ground? I know that at long last the gov't has stopped approving /insuring some flood plain area construction in the Ohio valley. I'm moved by the people's plight hut all the homes and businesses around the world in such vulnerable locations display a lack of good judgment.

Why doesn't the feds send a bus or two to get those folks off the overpass where Shep Smith is reporting? It is outrageous that those folks are out there with no shelter and being passed by.

He was reading a laundry list of stuff we're doing and have to do. There'll be other days, when he's on the ground in the Gulf states, and we'll hear more. Interesting that he thanked Harris County, Texas, the state of Texas for taking in refugees, etc., but aside from that, said Americans would take care of their own. No mention of the thundering silence from overseas. But private citizens who give millions to overseas charities will remember who offered help and who didn't, and those countries who preferred to sling mud won't see such an outpouring of generosity from America's citizens next time they need it.

My brother just moved from Slidell this summer and back to IL. They are trying to contact their next door neighbor in Slidell who decided to stay home during the storm.
