The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Computer programs are available for rapid comparisons, especially to eliminate obvious mis-matches.
So old dental x-rays can be used to identify large numbers of bodies with a reasonable amount of effort and expense.
Combine both dental x-rays and DNA comparisons, and it is definitely feasible to identify most missing persons for even the worst-case scenario numbers here.
Well, if the patronage system is a well estabilished as we've heard, many of those people were given jobs as rewards for services rendered to the Democratic Party. This may be the first occasion on which they have actually been called upon to do the jobs they were given, so naturally they are a little confused today. ;)
Yes but that interview will revereberate through the government! That woman was a complete idiot in her response. She is overwhelmed. She needs someone above her saying "GO HERE DO THIS" hopefully that someone will see that film clip!
Dear G*d! Those neighbourhoods were blasted to matchsticks! I'm surprised there aren't MORE bodies in the rubble. The wonder is that there are as many people out there, not in the Dome, but who survived that assault. It would be too cruel for them not to survive now.
But what is really making me angry is those people still on the ramp with no water. And Shep talking to that dozy Anne Marie of the EMO down there. What the... He asked her if she could get someone to help them and described one man with a two year old baby who had no water, just a towel to keep over it's eyes and asked her when they could expect some help. She started giving him one of these 'on message' responses. When he stopped her and shamed her into a corner asking her when they'd get help she didn't respond. I don't think their EM response people are trained or know what they're doing. Who's been in charge in that city? This is utter incompetence piled upon disaster. They should kick all these morons collecting paychecks who don't know their jobs out onto the watery streets and get some people in who know how to get things done. This is beyond frustrating. I wanted to smack that dozy broad. [Grrrrr!]
I am certain family members of missing victims will be asked to donate samples for DNA identification of some, but for many no such identification will be possible. Not unlike 9-11.
And they couldn't tow them far enough away, and there were just too many bodies.
I am afraid that the death toll for the entire group who died from this storm may be similar in number.
yo bill you out there?
I hope so. I hope the President himself was watching.

Hi everyone
We are in need of help with the emergency communications dealing
with the aftermath from Hurricane Katrina. At the present time we
are manning the communications station at the Ascension OEP
(requires 24 hour operation), Between Phil, Myself and Vickie and
Tena we have managed to man the OEP, however we need help with the
OEP during the Day hours. We have a big need for volunteers for the
Shelter at Lamar-Dixon, we presently have 1200+ refugees at that
shelter. The present though is to be able to provide communications
from 7 a.m. in the morning or so until about 9 p.m. in the evening.
Repeater Status: We are still operating on emergency power at the
repeater site. We request that The 225 repeater be made available
for emergency communications as much as possible, 146.985 is
available for every day use. Be advised that 147.225 is the only
repeater on battery back up. If we loose the 146.985 and the 444.725
then the generator is down for refueling or maintenance and should
be back up as soon as someone is able to break away from the OEP or
work. When the 146.985 is down that equates to 147.225 running on
battery and usage should be limited to emergency traffic. It is not
know at this time how long it will be before we are back on
commercial power and normal use, this is quite a bit of power line
damage in the area.
Thanks in advance for everyone's help at this time of need to
provide for our community.

What are people doing on the freeway ramp? Why are they there? Just trying to get caught up.
Does Shep, or Brian Williams, or other newsies have a way out? Or are they stranded like other people?
CNN says Charity Hospital unable to run dialysis machines now. Sheers to Shep for pointing out the need for directives and water, etc. Cheers to the nameless fellow Americans helping one another in this tragedy.
Huh? He can't land at a U.S. Air Force Base? (Where FEMA is setting up an HQ BTW)
It's already in progress - the military is already dropping supplies including water and food, per WWL.
The media can't cover everyting.
Opportunity for what? To get in the way of the rescue helicopters? Did you want him to wave to all the poor souls trapped on their roofs? I'm sure that would have quenched their thirst and eased the hunger. President Bush has tons more sense than you, thank goodness!

SCorrection: Sheers s/b Cheers.
Its dry
Not quite. The forecast models first showed a potential for a New Orleans hit on Friday afternoon. The NWS finally shifted their forecast late Friday, and first issued a hurricane watch on Saturday. By my calendar, that's under 3 days, and closer to 2.
Further, at that point, they didn't have a large site to put them (up until late Sunday, most of Louisiana was in the bullseye). There's a major difference between simply telling/ordering people to go and providing the means for them to go. Providing the means also implies that you'll take care of them. Now, they could have gotten a hold of the Texas governor to get the Astrodome or someplace else to use as an evacuation site, but that's now hindsight.
God help us all.
