The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

"I would like to see an executive order curbing unnecessary travel. That would, of course, include Cindy Sheehan's bus tour."

I'd like to see Mother Appeasement be derailed, but you can't be serious here! I don't think we ever want the government to determine what is 'necessary' for us!

Well, some bad news for oil prices from Katrina. I've seen the photos of Shell's Mars platform in the deepwater, and it appears to be heavily damaged. That's about 150,000 barrels of crude per day and about 150 million cubic feet of natural gas a day that has been removed from the supply.

I'm not a facilities engineer, but it looks to me to be nearly 30% destroyed which means months of repair.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if they used the reefer trucks that bring in the ice to bring out another kind of cargo :( We got our ice during Frances from NC brought in by 40ft refrigerated trailers. Of course the trailer couldn't make a return trip with ice after that.

They tried to pull them off shore a couple of times at Galveston, but they kept washing up, so they had to burn them. Very sad story.

Watching as they pull people up a rope to the helicopter.
One man clutched two new looking carry-on bags.
Am I being heartless to wish the bags be checked to see if they contained looted boxed jewelry, cameras etc?

I know, I know, I am being critical!

Your response echoes what Germany or at least one German paper said earlier today. To paraphrase, any ripple in the US economy caused by Katrina (our fault because we consume too much energy and won't sign Kyoto), washes over onto the EU and wrecks their economy.

Do we know if the people plucked off those roofs are provided food and water at the Superdome?

Shep is interviewing poor refugees from the projects. There's no water, no food, no nothing for them when they reach dry ground. God, this is overwhelming to witness..

Oh, give it a rest! I certainly do expect the government to give necessary orders during a national emergency. As can be seen, local officials cannot be counted on!
