The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

If I read the tide tables correctly, the tide is heading out and high tide will occur again at 8AM Thursday.

Given the situation, a breach on the river is anyone's guess.

How much higher is the river than the Lake Pont?

I think I heard Phil Keating also say that there is a school in NO somewhere that has about 100 people that are trapped and can't get out..

I caught the reference -- but I don't think they've got beyond "eat, drink, and be merry." In that way, they're a lot like my dog: he is happy right now, and doesn't worry about what happens next.

But of course, my dog is a lot better person than these looters.

I think the river is about 10 feet higher. I'm sure someone on here will know precisely.

They will get the thing fixed, bet on it.
Only the second day in and apparently they have barges and who knows what coming, and close
Amazing they could do it in such short order and in all the turmoil.

Looks like a lot of people have put in a monumental effort.

I'm far from an expert.....

I didn't mean to lecture you or anything. I'm no expert either. I just don't think there's much "postive" to this. I was disagreeing with CNN not you...:-)

Are you listening to these people from Houston? They have an honest-to-God PLAN! This is how you use a domed stadium!

From Rick Leventhal's report being replayed on Fox, the looting in Biloxi started even while the hurricane was raging. he said there is nothing left to loot.

Straight out of Lucifer's Hammer by Niven and Pournelle. In light of current events, that book is worth another read.

But of course, my dog is a lot better person than these looters.

That's because he's been properly brought up. Which is not the case with the looters.

Most dogs would range from annoying to downright dangerous if they weren't properly socialized/trained.

Beyond the whole HUD home /uninhabital issue, can you imagine the absolute WAR when the thugs currently ruling NO arrive in Detroit?

There needs to be housing created for at least 100 000 people for at least six months, likely more.

That's probably a very low estimate and doesn't take into account the hundreds of thousands who heeded the warnings to evacuate and ended up in hotel rooms or other temporary lodging spots believing they could go home in a day or two.

And it's not going to be any better in Houston.

There was some indication on this thread yesterday that levels in NO were already higher than the lake - it will be interesting to see now if the water in NO keeps rising, which would indicate a breach in a river levee.

Not to think negatively, but isn't it possible that a breech could be under the surface at this point?

Yes, there could be a breach under the levee. It would not be immediately apparent.
